 Depends...

Cichlids,  anything  from  five  to  several  thousand  gallons.

Gold  barbs  will  spawn  in  an  18"x9"x9"  tank.

Gouramies,  anything  from  ten  to  several  hundred  gallons.

Cichlid  breeding  in  a  5g  tank?  Really?  What  kind?  Shocked

Unless  you  want  to  breed  the  real  "gouramy"  (which  I  think  is  highly  highly  unlikely....lol!!)  gouramis  are  generally  fine  in  a  10g  tank,  but  you  have  to  move  the  fry  out  to  grow  them.  I  breed  three  spots  and  pearls  in  10g  tanks,  but  I  think  dwarf  gouramis  wouldn't  need  anything  larger  than  a  5g  tank.  Smile

 Hi  Ramanan,
Gold's  normally  breed  during  the  spring,  the  raise  in  temp  after  the  cold  (winter)  normally  triggers  the  breeding,  you  need  to  have  a  few  (4-6)  fish  together,  the  males  develop  little  bumps  on  their  gill  opercule's  and  chase  the  females  like  hell  (don't  we  all  males  do  that   ROFL  ).  You  could  google  "breeding  goldfish"  and  you  will  have  a  whole  bunch  of  info,  it's  too  detailed  to  explain  in  one  post  .

 All  the  best

Some  Apistogramma  and  Nannacara  species,  the  smaller  shelldwellers.  Nanochromis,  too.  If  you  have  a  very  compatible  pair.
