 Hi,

After  the  death  of  my  fish  more  than  a  year  ago  due  to  illness  and  my  carelessness,  the  tank  has  been  left  empty  and  I  totally  forgot  about  the  filter.  Its  been  holding  the  dirty  and  infected  water  for  over  a  year  now.  I've  not  opened  it  to  see  what's  the  condition  of  the  filter  yet.

How  do  I  re-use  it  now  ?  Should  I  be  buying  new  filter  media  or  can  I  clean  (Hot  water  +salt  will  do  ?)  and  re-use  ?

 Looking  forward  to  your  suggestions.

 Thanks  in  advance

if  i  were  you,  i  wold  buy  new  media  and  stuff....
 they  are  not  that  costly...
also  since  you  said  its  been  not  in  use  over  a  year  and  have  infected  water,  why  to  take  chances....
this  is  just  my  personal  opinion.....lets  see  what  experts  say...

 anyways  Welcome  back  to  hobby

Hi  jjaaxx44,  thanks  for  the  reply!  I  contacted  a  local  LFS  who  sells  JBL  filters  here  but  he  doesn't  have  the  filter  pads  in  stock.  He  can  only  give  me  ceramic  rings  at  a  rather  high  price.  So  if  I  only  replace  ceramic  rings  will  it  be  enough  ?

only  reason  for  ceramic  ring  is  provide  surface  area  for  you  bacterias  which  help  in  nitrogen  cycle...
you  don  need  high  quality  original  rings...

i  got  rings  and  pads  for  my  DIY  filter  for
150/  half  kg  and  320  for  2  different  kinds  of  ppi  pads  30-10  i  guess

 check  out  ebay....
 Ceramic  rings
 Foam  Pads

also  you  will  get  these  locally  as  well....may  be  some  local  hobbiest  on  IAH  will  guide  you...wait  for  others  to  reply...

I  doubt  you  filter  may  leak  as  you  have  not  used  for  a  long  time  due  the  "O"  safety  ring  will  loose  its  value  now.   Clean  everything  with  warm  salt  water  and  take  a  trial  for  one  day.   If  it  is  not  leaked  you  can  use,  or  else  you  have  to  go  for  change  of  "O"  safety  ring
 All  the  best.

Thanks!  So  if  it  doesn't  leak,  its  safe  to  wash  and  re-use  ?

@Ram:  Can  you  please  give  me  his  contact  number  ?

I  opened  and  washed  everything  in  warm  salt  water,  good  thing  is  there  was  close  to  zero  dirt  in  the  filter  and  everything  looked  in  good  condition,  however  there's  a  bad  smell  from  the  filter.

How  do  I  get  rid  of  it  since  i  can't  use  soap  to  wash  ?

 Thanks  Ram!

Guys,  any  suggestions  on  how  to  get  rid  of  the  smell  ?  The  ceramic  rings  and  the  filter  itself  is  free  of  smell  now,  just  the  filter  pads  have  a  bad  smell

Keep  it  where  the  sun  rays  directly  hit.   One  or  two  days  of  sun  rays  hit,  the  smell  will  go  off.

 Guys,  good  news!!

I  setup  the  filter  and  switched  it  on  to  check  for  any  leaks,  and  they  were  absolutely  none!   Very Happy  It  is  watertight  as  of  now,  looks  like  everything's  holding  up  well.  I  let  it  run  for  10  minutes  and  it  functioned  just  like  it  should,  quiet  and  efficient  operation.  I'm  really  impressed  with  JBL  build  quality,  a  year  of  being  idle  and  it  runs  just  as  it  should.

Thanks  for  the  input  sir!  I  had  a  word  with  Mr.  Vincent  and  he  opined  the  same  as  well.  Will  leave  it  in  the  sun  for  3  days  and  re-use.
