Though  the  discus  competition  was  great,  I  couldnt  enter  my  photos  in  the  competition  and  felt  left  out,  and  I  am  sure  so  did  many  others,  though  we  know  that  this  was  not  the  intention,  so  here  is  my  suggetion:

We  should  have  a  photo  competition  on  a  monthly  basis  and  people  should  be  allowed  to  enter  any  fish.  The  pictures  should  be  judged  on  the  basis  of  the  quality  of  the  picture,  the  beauty  of  the  fish,  the  angle  of  the  shot,  the  lighting  etc.

A  good  example  would  be  the  competition  held  by  cichlid-forum.com  regularly.  It  is  an  excellent  forum  to  show  off  great  pictures.

 Regards,
 Clowny.

 Hi  Madan
We  are  now  getting  requests  for  more  competitions.
Time  for  "Tank  Of  the  month"  or  similar  Very Happy
The  competitions  of  these  type  will  increase  the  knowledge  of  members  in  taking  photos.
Taking  a  good  photo  is  never  about  costly  equipment.
It  has  been  a  childhood  hobby  of  mine  passed  on  to  me  by  my  father.
We  even  had  a  developing  room  in  out  house.
Those  black  &  white  photos  are  excellent  in  quality  and  were  developed  at  our  home.  The  camera  used  a  very  ordinery  one.
Later  on  when  I  shifed  to  state  of  art  "Pentax  SLR",  I  found  that  taking  photos  is  even  easier.
However  I  am  not  very  much  conversant  with  digital  cameras.  So  far  I  have  not  been  able  to  find  a  digital  which  can  support  my  vast  array  of  lenses.  I  wish  sombody  could  help  me  with  it.

The  digital  SLRs  will  take  any  of  the  lenses  that  the  older  film  cameras  take.  I  have  Canon  EOS  350D  and  can  change  the  lenses  as  I  wish
It  is  just  that  these  cameras  are  more  expensive  to  buy,  but  in  the  long  run  digital  works  out  cheaper  as  you  don't  have  to  pay  to  get  the  film  developed  and  so  you  can  take  as  many  photos  as  you  like  without  worrying  about  the  cost
You  can  check  out  the  various  SLR  digital  cameras  on  the  net

I  have  a  Fujinon  S5600  which  is  one  of  their  higher  end  cameras  and  it  can  take  additional  lenses.  There  are  about  5  models  that  are  higher  than  this  one  in  the  Fuji  series  and  it  works  out  to  much  cheaper  than  Canon.  I  bought  it  online,  so  you  should  prolly  check  it  out.  A  good  website  for  camera  reviews  is  dpreview.com.

Anyway,  back  to  my  original  question  regarding  photo  comps,  I  am  willing  to  volunteer  to  co-ordinate,  and  we  really  really  need  more  photo  comps  so  please,  please,  please  oblige    Cheering

Guys  you'll  have  a  Photo  Contest  as  a  regular  affair.  It  need  not  be  monthly,  bi-monthly  would  be  good  IMO.  So  that  people  who  do  not  have  good  pictures  for  a  particular  contest  do  have  an  oppurtunity  to  look  for  the  fish,  to  take  pictures,  select  and  enter  them  in  the  contest.

The  Discus  competition  was  On  for  3  weeks  at  least,  and  we  had  only  13  participants,  though  entries  were  much  higher  in  number.

The  Photo  contest  will  definitely  prod  people  to  post  their  best  on  IAH.

Atanu  is  already  developing  a  How  To  Tutorial  regarding  photographing  and  it  should  be  up  here  soon.

I  also  would  like  the  judges  panel  be  a  fixed  one,  comprised  of  people  knowledgeable  regarding  photography,  and  they  can  post  a  critical  review  of  the  pictures  entered  in  the  contest.

Let's  give  as  many  people  a  chance  to  develop  their  photographing  skills  before  having  a  Best  Tank  photograph.  Until  then  let's  stick  to  fish.

I  have  had  my  tank  photographed  to  enter  the  Amano  Aquatic  Plants  layout  contest,  it  took  my  professional  photographer  friend  7  hrs  to  set  up  the  equipment,  and  10  minutes  to  actually  click  the  tank.  the  tank  was  a  3  x2  x  2  feet  planted  tank,  densely  planted  tank.  We  had  to  rush  back  to  his  studio  for  more  lights  in  the  middle  of  the  night,  use  table  lamps,  so  that  there  were  no  dark  areas  in  the  picture,  as  to  get  the  depth  of  field  he  had  to  shoot  at  an  aperture  setting  of  f  25.  One  single  pic  is  what  you  submit  in  this  contest  and  it  has  to  be  bloody  good.  The  tank  placed  42  in  the  world  after  all  this.

AGA  has  a  yearly  tank  competition,  where  5  pictures  of  the  tank  are  entered,  this  format  would  be  better  IMO.

To  judge  a  complete  tank  fairly,  you  need  minute  details  to  be  visible,  and  this  is  something  beginners  will  find  difficult.  There's  a  lot  of  thought  to  go  into  a  tank  contest  and  rules  to  be  made,  before  we  have  one,  categories  like  planted  aquaria,  marine,  cichlid,  terrariums,  then  sub-categories,  then  tank  sizes  etc.,.

Photographing  fish  will  be  a  lot  easier  for  beginner's  IMO.  Let's  not  jump  to  something  that  will  be  very  difficult  to  judge.

Let's  up  the  ante  as  we  go  along.

 What  say?

I  agree  that  the  judges  panel  be  a  fixed  one.  There  should  be  one  coordinator  with  the  judges,  or  one  of  the  judges  can  be  a  coordinator.
The  coordinator  can  perpare  the  excel  sheet  and  can  mail  to  all  the  judges.  This  will  make  the  decision  making  faster.
The  tenure  of  the  panel  be  a  fixed  for  one  year  or  so  with  a  provision  of  standby  judges.

   ROFL    ROFL    ROFL.

Not  my  Decision!  Very Happy    ROFL

Once  the  results  of  the  Discus  Contest  are  announced,  I'll  put  up  a  poll  and  the  Fish/category  with  the  highest  votes  makes  the  Competition.

People  be  very  honest,  don't  vote  more  than  once  in  the  poll!

 What  are  the  Fish/categories  now?

I  think  we  can  have  a  maximum  of  7  choices  in  a  Poll,  I'll  have  to  check!

Guys  be  careful  while  photographing  your  marine  fishes.  Few  of  them  are    succeptable  to  bright  light  and  can  get  a  shock  if  you  are  photographing  them  with  high  powered  flash.  ..

I  have  photographed  thousands  of  marine  fish  in  the  aquarium  and  very,  very  few  even  notice  the  flash  going  off.
So  do  not  worry  about  using  flash  when  photographing  your  marines.

 Hi  Iggy,
Thanks  for  putting  the  facts  right.  I  am  less  of  an  aquarist  and  more  of  a  photographer.  Those  are  the  information  which  I  have  read  somewhere  on  the  net.  Sorry  that  I  couldn't  differentiate  between  the  chaff  and  the  wheat  Sad    .  I  would  take  that  from  an  aquarist  and  photographer  though.  Many  thanks.

 Regards
