 Hi  Brij,
There  is  no  single  answer  to  your  question.
Either  you  decide  first  what  fish  you  would  like  to  keep  and  then  let  that  decide  the  tank  size  assuming  you  have  the  space  and  can  afford  the  required  size.
Else  you  decide  what  size  you  can  accommodate  and  get  fish  that  suit  the  size.
Good  part  is  that  great  fish  are  available  in  a  huge  variety  for  every  wallet.

Some  fish  cannot  be  kept  with  others  due  to  reasons  of  aggression,  temperature,  different  habitat  requirements  etc.  So  you  would  need  to  study  or  ask  about  the  specific  fish  you  want  to  keep.

number  of  fish  you  can  keep  in  a  single  tank  also  varies  with  type  of  fish  and  type  of  habitat  you  are  providing.

Rules  like  number  of  inches  of  fish  per  gallon  are  very  broad  guidelines  and  you  would  do  well  to  ignore  them  and  stick  to  advise  here  or  other  reputed  forums.

Do  mot  depend  on  your  local  fish  shop  for  advise  as  it  will  in  most  cases  be  flawed.

Stock  less  fish.  feed  high  quality  food  of  the  right  type  sparingly  and  your  fish  will  thrive.

 Regards,
 Venkat

 Huge  variety  just  dont  overstock.

A  livebearer  community  tank  will  be  ideal.
 Guppy  -  males  only
Swordtails-  two  females  and  1  male
 Platies
Mollies  -  goldenor  black  or  chocolate.
Gourami  -  dwarfs  are  better  although  getting  good  quality  ones  is  difficult

 Fish  to  avoid  completely
 Goldfish
 Fighters
 sucker  fish-  plecostomus  sp
 sharks  -  silver,  redtail

Others  keeping  freshwater  fish  can  add  to  the  list.

Remember  to  feed  good  quality  food  like  tetrabits  very  sparingly.

Dont  buy  the  fish  you  see  at  the  shop  till  you  have  confirmed  and  asked  or  googled  about  it.

 regards,
 Venkat

Livebearers!  Since  you  are  new  to  aquariums.  Not  so  sure  if  gouramis  suit  a  2  feet  tank.

Vkv  has  given  solid  advice.  You  would  do  well  not  to  ignore.  Stock  lightly,  feed  sparingly.

In  the  fish  shop  remember  not  to  give  into  temptation.
