Can  anyone  tell  me  what  material  do  LFS  use  for  making  such  canopies  for  glass  tanks?  I  really  want  to  make  one  at  home.  What  adhesive  do  I  use  and  where  is  such  material  available?

Post  links  for  any  DIYs  for  such  canopy/  roof/  hood  below
.  Thanks.

ok,  where  do  i  get  such  stuff?  because  when  I  asked  for  acrylic  in  a  hardware/plywood  store..this  is  what  they  showed  me  -

it  was  transparent.  The  hood  I  have  showed  in  the  pic  above  is  non-transparent/colored  and  can  be  easily  cut  with  a  pen  knife  while  the  transparent  acrylic  cant  be  cut  in  such  a  manner.

It  looks  like  HDF  BOARD  -  high  density  fibre  board  exterior  grade  approx  6  mm  thick  which  can  be  cut.  Normally  photo  frame  guys  use  at  back  of  frame

 Hi  girlcookart,
The  are  commonly  called  Foam  Board..  you  will  get  them  in  hard  ware  stores  selling  acrylic  boards  or  in  ply-wood  stores.
But  the  issue  is  they  will  not  available  in  small  local  shops,  look  out  in  major  hardware  store  where  there  are  shops  meant  for  industrial  suppliers.
We  get  it  in  BVK  Iyengar  road,  in  Bangalore..

if  you  want  to  make  it  yourself,  you  will  need  a  good  wood  cutting  saw  or  an  automatic  sawing  machine.  Use  areldite  for  sticking.  This  acrylic  boards  normaly  get  in  Kilos  and  not  in  lXBXH  in  mumbai..  buy  8mm  board  according  to  your  measurements.  first  make  a  design  of  cardboard  for  exact  cuttings.  To  smoothen  the  edges  you  will  have  to  buy  emery  paper  from  hardware  store  (it  has  a  number).  The  poeple  who  make  it  here  use  chloroform  to  stick  it.  But  its  hard  to  get  for  us.  You  will  get  different  colors.Remember,  that  the  lower  part  of  the  hood  will  carry  all  its  weight  and  including  all  the  stuff  you  will  put  on  it.  So  the  shelving  edges  should  be  stick  very  strongly.  There  are  other  adhesives  which  can  bind  it  very  strongly  also  eg..  you  can  buy  rebond  from  automobile  shops  which  will  stick  like  leach  Chuckle

Hey  garothmaan,  I  agree  if  you  are  talking  about  the  acrylic..
But  stop  scaring  people,  she  wants  Foam  Boards  which  are  a  bit  like  hard  boards.  they  can  easily  be  cut  by  Knife,  and  we  can  use  Fevi  Quick  to  join  them..  they  are  the  easiest  to  work  with,  I  have  built  many  hoods  with  this  for  my  circle..

 Hi,

Its  locally  called  as  Sun  board  here  in  Bangalore.  Its  pretty  easy  to  work  with  this  material.  As  Nidhi  has  mentioned,  you  just  need  a  good  sharp  knife  to  cut  the  sheet.  I  had  earlier  made  a  hood  using  the  sun  board.  You  get  this  material  in  different  thickness:  3  mm,  4,  5,  6,  8  ,12,  15,  19  etc...But  if  you  want  in  color,  then  you  get  only  in  3-4mm  thickness.  Rest  all  comes  in  white  color.

 For  12"  cube

 2.5'  T5  Hood.

But  I  must  say  that  this  material  would  bend  if  exposed  to  more  heat.  It  also  burns  if  heated  more.  Sticking  is  pretty  easy.  You  can  use  fevi  quick  (instant  glue)  to  glue  the  sheet.

Very  impressive-  it  should  be  much  economical  than  acrylic  then...  and  much  lighter  also  I  presume...  but  it  bends  right..  if  we  put  something  on  its  top?  but  I  like  the  idea..  awesome  Thumb Up

 Ya  Garothmaan,
Yes  its  very  light,  but  doesn't  bend  easily..  It  goes  out  of  shape  where  the  heat  from  the  bulbs  radiates,  it  will  melt  if  the  heat  is  too  much.
One  more  thing  is  it  will  get  brittle  over  time  and  the  color  will  fade..

I  really  got  scared  by  garothmaan's  diy,  I  am  no  pro  at  diy  but  that  was  extreme  for  me.  Yeah,  foam  board  is  what  I  need.  Thanks  so  much  for  the  idea,Nidhi:)
