PostPosted: Wed Sep 25, 2013 11:12 am Post subject: Need help in setup of a Discus tank Reply with quote

 Hi,

I  want  to  setup  a  good  Discus  tank.  I  have  an  experience  of  keeping  Silver  Arowana,  Pearl  Arowana  and  Flowerhorn.

Now  I  am  started  keeping  Discus  in  my  3  ft  X  1ft  X  1ft  tank.  At  this  stage,  i  have  only  two  pairs  of  Discus  in  a  Bare  bottom  tank.

 I  need  your  advise.

First  of  all,  my  regular  aquarium  fish  seller  said  that  not  to  keep  gravel  in  Discus  tank  which  will  lead  to  infection  to  your  Discus.  But  i  myself  not  liking  bare  bottom  tank  and  want  to  add  gravel  in  my  tank.

I  have  white  gravel  sufficient  for  covering  bottom  at  least  1  inch  think  and  I  am  currently  working  on  DIY  bottom  (under  gravel)  filter.

Secondly,  I  already  have  completed  preparation  and  dry  run  of  DIY  Canister  Filter  from  Lock  and  Lock  container  (basically,  i  prepared  this  filter  to  set  up  planted  aquarium  but  due  to  no  sufficient  funds  in  my  saving,  i  have  postponed  this  idea)

Hence,  my  Discus  Tank  would  have  may  be  10  Discus  fishes,  white  gravel,  DIY  under  gravel  filter  working  on  Air  Pump  +  DIY  canister  filter  (working  on  power  head),  heater   and  Siphon  Gravel  Cleaner.

I  usually  change  20%  water  every  2  days  and  add  Chlorine  remover  solution  and  little  salt.  I  feed  Tetra  bits  and  live  blood  worms  to  my  Discus.

 My  queries  are:

[*]  Is  it  good  to  keep  Discus  in  Gravel  bottom  tank?

[*]  Is  there  any  possibility  of  spreading  infectious  bacterias  in  my  tank  due  to  gravel?

[*]  After  this  kind  of  setup,  at  what  frequency  should  i  change  the  water  and  by  what  amount?

[*]  At  what  frequency,  should  i  clean  gravel  by  siphon  gravel  cleaner?

[*]  If  I  want  to  add  Driftwood  to  my  aquarium,  what  kind  of  care  do  i  need  to  take  before  and  after  adding  this?

 Awaiting  for  your  valuable  inputs.

 Regards,

 Manish

[*]  Is  it  good  to  keep  Discus  in  Gravel  bottom  tank?
That  should  not  be  a  problem.  most  people  say  that  because  it  is  easier  to  clean  bare-bottom  tank.

[*]  Is  there  any  possibility  of  spreading  infectious  bacteria  in  my  tank  due  to  gravel?
 NO  !!!

[*]  After  this  kind  of  setup,  at  what  frequency  should  i  change  the  water  and  by  what  amount?
You  can  keep  your  present  water  change  schedule  ...  "I  usually  change  20%  water  every  2  days"

[*]  At  what  frequency,  should  i  clean  gravel  by  siphon  gravel  cleaner?
As  often  as  you  can.  You  can  also  keep  some  bottom  feeders,  like  corries.

[*]  If  I  want  to  add  Driftwood  to  my  aquarium,  what  kind  of  care  do  i  need  to  take  before  and  after  adding  this?
be  sure  the  driftwood  is  properly  cured.  As  you  would  in  an  any  other  aquarium.

 Thanks  Abhishek!

This  information  will  be  really  useful  for  me.

Is  there  different  types  in  Driftwood  available  at  aquarium  store?  If  so,  what  type  would  be  good  to  keep  in  discus  tank?

If  we  ask  anything  to  shopkeeper  which  we  don't  know  much,  he  always  show  some  really  expensive  thing  saying  'It's  Imported'.

I  don't  mind  to  pay  slightly  high  but  that  thing  should  be  worth  for  that  extra  money.

Simple  rule  ....Don't  believe  the  shopkeeper  :)

If  you  have  any  doubts,  you  can  post  it  on  this  forum,  someone  will  help  you  out.

Regarding  driftwood,  any  hardwood  is  good.  you  need  not  go  in  for  expensive  stuff.  I  have  few  locally  collected  woods(not  by  me,  but  my  friends)  in  my  tank.  they  do  just  fine.

 Hi  Abhishek,

First  of  all,  thanks  for  you  suggestions.

Here  is  my  Discus  Tank.  Discus  Tank  with  DIY  Canister  Filter

A  plain  set  up  with  white  gravel  and  driftwood.  I  have  placed  a  DIY  canister  filter  (Sponge  and  Bio  rings;  not  added  activated  carbon  at  this  stage)  and  one  under  gravel  filter.

I  have  also  added  one  tube  grid  to  provide  bubbles  from  gravel.

Now,  it's  time  to  get  more  discus  in  my  tank.

Hi  I  would  suggest  the  below.

[*]  Is  it  good  to  keep  Discus  in  Gravel  bottom  tank?

It  is  better  to  have  Contra  Soil  instead  of  Gravel.  this  soil  will  reduce  the  PH  Level  of  the  water  and  will  help  discus  for  a  better  growth.  this  come  with  a  10  liter  bag  depending  on  the  tank  size  you  could  buy.

[*]  Is  there  any  possibility  of  spreading  infectious  bacteria  in  my  tank  due  to  gravel?
It  would  be  better  if  you  could  do  some  plantation  in  you  tank  so  that  the  nitrate  level  will  also  be  maintained.

[*]  After  this  kind  of  setup,  at  what  frequency  should  i  change  the  water  and  by  what  amount?
Do  a  50%  water  change  weekly.

[*]  At  what  frequency,  should  i  clean  gravel  by  siphon  gravel  cleaner?
If  your  going  to  put  the  Contra  Soil  there  is  not  necessary  for  you  to  clean  the  gravel.

[*]  If  I  want  to  add  Driftwood  to  my  aquarium,  what  kind  of  care  do  i  need  to  take  before  and  after  adding  this?
Once  you  buy  drift  wood  from  the  local  pet  store  please  submerse  the  wood  in  water  change  the  water  daily  for  next  2  weeks  so  that  chemicals  which  are  used  for  the  wood  would  be  released  and  can  be  used  further.
The  other  important  point  here  is  that   please  buy  discus  with  about  3+  inch  so  that  it  can  Stabilize  quickly  for  the  water  condition.  And  also  buy  a  heater  and  set  to  30  Degrees  for  the  first  30  to  45  days  and  then  the  temp  can  be  reduced  to  28  degrees.
Please  feed  tertra  bit  complete  bit  expensive  but  does  the  job  of  color  /growth  and  Health.

Manish  ,  Adding  salt   (  NaCl  )  )  after  every  water  change  and  feeding  live  blood  worms  (  freshwater  worms  )  your  both  these  actions  are  not  correct  for  discus  keeping  .  One  day  your  discus  may  have  serious  problem  .

Salt  is  only  needed  when  they  are  sick.  So  need  to  add  salt  unnecessary  after  wc.
