Firstly I would like to congratulate you guys on the awesome site! Really helpful for beginners like me & i'm sure its the same for the enthusiasts too.
I'm going about setting up my first tank. I have done a lot of read ups on the net about fishkeeping/Cycling/Nitrogen cycle/Filtration, etc but need some help/clarification regarding my setup. Hope you guys are kind enough to oblige
My tank size is 18" (Length) X 9" X 9". I know the size is less than the lowest recommended but I have space constraints & budget constarints I'm only
planning to keep 2 pairs of live bearers after the tank has cycled. Once I 'm comfortable & learn the basics I plan to move on to a bigger setup with plants.
I have purchased a Dophin KF-350 Internal submersible filter with a capacity of 190 Liters/Hour from my LFS along with my tank. It says on the box that it has all three forms of filtration(Bio,Mech, Chem), though I'm doubtful as all I can see is a foam like structure inside. Will this filter suffice my filtration & aeration needs? I understand Bio filter(bacteria) take time to grow but do I need any additional chemical filter? I don't plan on using an air pump/air stones.
I'm suing 2" of Gravel (Marble chips) purchased from my LFS and don't plan on using any plants, though might try & get some floating plants later on if & when I
find it in any store(which I haven't yet)!
I'm in a conundrum on which water to use. Cauvery water or borewell? My borewell water is slightly brackish in nature but my LFS guy says it should be fine. What do you guys suggest? If I need to use Cauvery/Tap water do I need to use a Chlorine remover? My LFS guy says all you need to do is to keep the water for 24 Hours before
introducing into the tank, which will remove most of the Cl.
I'm using a canopy fitted by my LFS guy with a Hitachi 10 Watt Aquarium Light with Ballast on the outside. Will this suffice, as I don't plan to use any plants? What should the ideal distance between the Water level of the aquarium & the canopy be or is that immaterial?
Also need some help regarding starting fish for cycling. Will Black Molly or Guppies do? Plan on introducing a single pair and watching their progress for 45 days before introducing my next pair.
How often do i need to do partial water changes, as its a small volume aquarium? I hear that 30-40% per week should be adequate for the first few weeks after which i can bring it down to 20-30%.
Wow sure had a lot of queries for you guys. I sure hope you guys can help me out with my first aquarium set up & soon I’ll be on my way to be an expert, err some years down the line!

Welcome to IAH. First of all introduce your self with us. Like your name, location etc because we dont like to call people by thier login id.
Comming to your queries :
In my opinion you dont need any additional filter for your tank. Your Dophin KF-350 filter will do the job.
If you are going to use your corporation water, then using anti chlorine medicine/media is must and if you are going to introduce the filsh after 24 hrs, then you dont have to use any anti chlorine medicice, but @ the time of water change you have to use anti chlorine.
Your lighting is ok, keep atleast 3" distance.
You can start with Black Sailfin Mollies, Guppies, Platies, Sword Tails etc.
