This  will  be  viable  only  with  higher  end  LED,  like  cree  or  osram.

True  for  their  accuracy  against  the  specification  and  they  have  a  good  cost  too   Smile

People  think  that  all  LED  are  same,  if  thats  the  case  then  people  then  go  for  cheap  Chinese  LED  and  think  they  are  saving  a  lot  on  power.

Let  me  clarify  that  the  Chinese  LED  are  less  efficient  than  the  T5  or  PLL  bulbs  from  osram  or  Philips.

Less  effective  compared  to  CREE  but  not  against  T5  or  PLL  for  sure.
I  can  run  a  4X2X2  tank  with  140w  successfully  (which  is  moderate  to  high  light).  140w  of  power  consumption  against  220w  or  more  for  a  T5  am  definitely  saving  some  power  there.

Nidhi  wrote  (View  Post):

And  their  life  expectancy  is  also  not  guaranteed.  .

True,  Most  err's  comes  from  over  running  the  LED  than  the  input  it  can  take.
Building  them  the  proper  way  by  providing:  proper  input  (V  &  A),  heat  sink,  coolant,  fan.  Burning  them  can  be  reduced

 Conclusion
Am  not  supporting  or  recommending  Chinese  LED's  here  but  saying  they  will  do  the  job  effectively  as  well.  Many  IAH  members  have  had  good  success  with  that.

CREE  the  best  option  if  you  have  the  money  but  Chinese  LED's  are  also  an  equivalent  option  as  well.

Gorothmaan,  AFIK  Its  about  deciding  &  choosing  required  wattage,  right  leds,  optics  ,  heatsink  and  above  all  and  selecting  correct  driver  to  power  these  leds.  then  comes  the  assembling.  I  am  too  keeping  a  watch  on  this.

agreed,  all  the  hardware  can  be  sourced,  while  all  the  technique  will  be  provided  by  the  members  on  IAH,

however...  the  resultant  output  will  only  be  demonstrated  by  the  plants  in  reality.  going  forward,  if  all  the  theory  does  not  give  the  appropriate  out  put,  then  its  totaly  worthless.

If  you  check  out  the  Aquarium  forums  like  plantedtank  and  barreport,  many  have  setup  LEDs  for  their  planted  tank  in  DIY  way  and  the  results  are  great.  So  there  is  no  reason  that  when  we  do  it  we  can  go  wrong  with  plants  growth  on  this  LED  lights,  its  just  light  sourceas  T5  or  T8  etc  but  more  light  with  lesser  power  usage.  Also  I  missed  2  more  points  in  my  previous  post  i.e.  the  color  temperature  and  PAR  values  to  consider  based  on  the  tank.

Can  you  please  also  provide  an  example  on  how  different  is  the  calculation  of  watts  per  gallon  in  case  of  LEDs  &  how  to  go  for  Par  value  for  the  same.
The  main  reason  for  selecting  LEDs  is  they  save  cost  and  their  long  term  cost  is  more  efficient  as  compared  to  other  light  sources..  Smile

 Hi,

Well  i  have  done  a  DIY  for  my  4feet  tank  with  the  chinese  LED's.  To  be  very  much  honest  these  setups  are  too  cheap  in  comparison  to  what  we  get  ready  to  use  in  market.  I  can  help  you  in  case  you  are  interested  in  DIY  yourself.

PostPosted: Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:01 pm Post subject: Re: LED requirements ? Help Reply with quote

With  my  experience  with  LEDs  i  can  suggest  the  following:

dont  look  at  the  wattage  as  you  cannot  compare  that  to  T5's  or  MH's.
can  do  a  12  LED  setup  and  that  should  cover  and  area  of  1'6"X1'6"  on  the  tank  with  2  feet  of  glass  with  the  fixture  at  9-12"  from  the  top  of  the  tank.  The  spacing  between  the  LEDs  is  3"...  so  you  have  a  3X4  grid  or  a  2X6  grid  to  get  the  design.
The  depth  of  the  tank  and  the  distance  the  LEds  are  from  the  water  determine  your  lens  -  60  degree  suits  all.  if  you  keep  you  fixture  at  a  good  height  of  1'6"-2'  from  the  tank  then  you  need  a  40  Degree  Lens.
I  agree  with  Chinese  LED's  to  be  lower  of  quality  but  compared  to  the  pricing  of  CREE  they  are  much  cheaper  but  be  ready  to  replace  them  in  a  few  years.  The  difference  is  that  you  cannot  get  the  correct  BIN  (color  rating)  from  chinese  LEDS,  but  that  is  required  only  for  marine  tanks.  For  planted  you  just  discuss  cool  whites,  warm  whites  and  neutral  whites  that  make  the  selection  of  LED's  much  simpler.

If  you  do  it  urself  it  will  be  much  much  cheaper,  but  the  time  you  need  to  spend  is  lots.
but  it  aint  rocket  science,  its  easy  though.  Very Happy
