Few  ideas  clicked  in  my  mind...
 Idea  no.  1  :
 What  if....
I  connect  my  tank  to  my  commode  via  a  hose,  in  such  a  way  that  everytime  I  flush,  some  amount  of  water  drains  from  the  hose  to  the  commode  water  tank.
So  that  everytime  the  commode  flush  is  pressed  dirty  water  from  fish  tank  gets  flushed  while  fresh  water  will  get  filled  in  the  fish  tank  of  same  amount.
Its  weird   Chuckle  but  kinda  innovative...think  bout  it  guys!!

 Salil,
Your  idea  can  work,  you  need  some  modification  on  the  tank  to  connect  to  the  commode,  You  must  drill  a  hole  and  use  a  nipple  (bulkhead)  to  connect  the  hose  on  the  tank.  And  you  need  something   like  a  float  switch  to  control  the  top  up  in  the  aquarium..

One  more  thing,  I  saw  on  your  other  post  that  your  tank  is  small.
What  is  the  size  of  your  tank..?
I  would  suggest  this  set  up  only  if  your  tank  is  big,  like  50  Gallons  or  more.
If  your  tank  is  small,  then  the  the  water  changes  will  be  too  huge  and  drastic  for  the  fishes..

Not  to  mention  if  there  are  visitors  and  in  extreme  cases  of  loose  motion.  Chuckle

Jokes  apart,  I  think  such  innovative  ideas  and  green  thoughts  should  be  constantly  explored.

Using  the  aquarium  water  to  flush  the  toilet  is  a  good  idea.  But  in  a  away  it  is  wasting.
The  water  from  the  aquarium  is  a  manure  that  can  be  used  for  watering  house  plants.  Or  exchanged  with  the  neighbor   in  return  for  fresh  water  for  you  aquarium,  if  he  is  garden  man  and  you  are  not.

Also  unless  the  aquarium  is  in  your  toilet,  the  cost  of  plumbing  and  hiding  all  the  pipes  to  and  from  the  toilet  to  the  main  room  can  be  a  problem  and  also  expensive.

The  height  of  the  table  that  your  aquarium  sits  should  also  be  considerably  higher.

 not  worth  it.......

 keep  thinking

 regards

 Niranjan

good  point  Niranjan...one  thing  to  resolve  the  issue  of  frequent  visits  for  Nature's  call  can  be  to  set  the  plumbing  pipe  connection  to  tank  at  such  a  level  that  it  can  suck  maximum  of  30%  of  tank  water  capacity.

This  idea,  if  thought  rational,  it  can  save  costs  in  buying  aeration  and  filtration  equipment...electricity  required  for  these  equipment.

...provided  tap  water  quality  is  good.
No  aeration  no  filtration...and  also  better  way  of  saving  water.

 Nidhi,
Tank  size  wont  matter,  since  the  plumbing  connection  will  be  at  certain  height  to  suck  just  30%  of  water  as  I  said...

Your  idea  seems  good  for  an  average  family  day.
Also  think  about  having  a  public  commode  beside  a  discus  farm,  they  really  do  so  many  water  changes.

But  rather  than  the  commode  part,  it  is  the  flush  part  that  impresses  me  a  lot.  Push  of  the  button  the  water  goes  from  tank  to  the  garden.  Just  that  you  need  to  be  regular  in  flushing.

Once  had  similar,idea...  was  to  make  a  glass  flush  tank  for  discus  fish.  Cool

Is  it  safe  to  use  aquarium  water  to  water  plants?

30%  water  removal  is  OK,  but  are  you  going  to  restrict  the  inflow  into  the  aquarium  to  refill  the  30%  removed?  If  not  then  30%  removed  with  one  flush  will  multiply  into  dangerous  level  of  water  change  with  multiple  flush.
Unless  I  am  missing  something  here.

Also  it  is  not  safe  to  assume  that  aeration  and  filtration   can  be  replaced  with  water  changes.

My  ideas  might  be  weird  or  hypothetical,  but  it  might  create  new  innovations  with  our  buddy  hobbyists...   Smile

 Idea  no.  2  :
Most  of  us  have  fishes  which  eat  away  the  plants.  Then  why  not  plant  such  as  Cyperus  alternifolius  which  I  read  in  an  article  (link  :  http://www.tuncalik.com/2009/09/biotope-in-my-study/  )
The  leaves  will  be  above  the  tank,  while  the  roots  would  purify  the  tank  water  by  absorbing  all  the  nitrates  (  n  all  the  fish  poo  contents...  )
Has  anyone  tried  doing  this  in  fish  tank??  Due  to  low  levels  of  nitrates,  phosphates  even  algae  can  be  controlled...
Can  expert  throw  some  more  light  on  this  idea...

This  is  nothing  new.  People  have  used  this  method  for  many  years.  I  had  one  years  ago  and  never  fed  the  fish  for  nearly  16  months.  But  it  did  not  start  as  a  project.  Just  happened  to  come  naturally  because,  I  had  no  access  to  fertilizers,  exotic  plants  and  fish  food  even.  That  was  back  in  82.  Totally  powerless  tank.  No  water  changes  too.  Just  top  up.
It  has  only  become  fashionable  now.

I  think  you  must  try  this.

There  are  many  low  profile  tanks  that  can  get  away  with  anything.  Ultimately  what  matters  is  that  the  owner  of  the  aquarium  is  happy  with  what  he  has.

Personally,  I  feel  that,  a  tank  should  be  neat  and  well  made.  The  layout  displayed  should  be  as  close  to  nature  as  possible.  How  I  achieve  it  depends  on  my  ability.  I  can  either  blow  a  lot  of  money  and  get  instant  fix  or  wait  and  take  it  slowly  till  i  get  what  I  need  without  spending  anything.  (yes  it  can  be  done)

Regarding  saving  water,  top  up  option  will  be  best  as  there  is  no  normal  30%  water  change.  This  method  is  not  pretty.  If  you  are  changing  the  30%  weekly,  I  suggest  you  do  not  flush  it  down  the  drain.

Let  me  give  you  a  more  precise  example.   I  have  a  5'x  18'  x  18'  tank  and  the  tank  is  untouched  since  2003.  It  retains  the  same  setting  and  plants  that  it  started  off  with.  I  have  added  some  plants  now  and  then  off  course  but  very  minimal.  Over  a  period  of  time  the  tank  was  filled  up  to  an  extent  that  I  had  to  trim  and  give  away  plants.

Water  change  of  30%  normally  gives  me  2  to  2.5  large  25  Lt  buckets  of  water.  I  used  to  carry  these  buckets  up  to  the  terrace  and  water  the  lemon  tree  and  the  few  herbs  I  had  in  potted  containers.  Eventually  I  started  to  dose  the  ornamental  plants  too.  The  result  was  slow  but  good.

People  with  aquarium  have  always  been  accused  of  wasting  water.  I  find  this  hard  to  believe.  All  efforts  to  reduce  water  is  actually  targeted  towards  reducing  the  water  bill  and  not  water.  Assuming  water  is  made  free  to  all  household  today  no  body  will  talk  about  water  saving.

30%  water  change  is  nothing  compared  to  the  water  we  waste  cleaning  our  car,  bikes  and  the  amount  wasted  by  abusing  it  during  normal  household  activity.

Saving  water  by  individual   house  will  not  solve  the  problem  since  we  are  not  consuming  fast  enough  but  we  are  destroying  water  source  by  construction  and  modernization.  We  are  neither  planting  nor  taking  care  of  existing  trees.

This  is  a  subject  that  will  need  a  lot  of  typing  and  I  will  bore  a  lot  of  people  here.  Therefore  just  enjoy  the  hobby  and  flush  in  peace.

 regards
