 Hi  Nik,

Need  all  these  inputs  to  answer  your  queries.

What  tank  do  you  have?  (Planted/Freshwater)?
What  fishes  do  you  have  in  your  tank?
What  is  the  size  of  your  tank?

[*]Do  i  still  need  to  do  WC  once  a  week  even  with  the  Canister  filter?

Based  on  the  tank  type,  number  of  fishes  in  the  tank,  size  of  the  fishes  in  the  tank.

[*]Can  I  have  the  canister  filter  work  24X7

Yes.  Filters  have  to  be  run  24/7  365  days.  You  are  not  supposed  to  switch  off  the  filters.

[*]how  and  when  do  i  clean  the  canister?

Based  on  the  tank  size,  number  of  fishes  in  the  tank,  fish  size.

[*]Which  media  is  suggested  in  the  canister  for  better  performance?

Based  on  the  tank  type.  There  are  different  medias  available  in  market.

 Hi,

Since  your  bio-load  is  less,  you  need  not  change  water  every  week  end.  May  be  once  in  3  weeks  should  be  fine  I  guess.

Also  cleaning  the  canister  depends  on  the  bio-load.  So  you  can  again  clean  the  canister  once  in  2  or  3  months.

[*]how  and  when  do  i  clean  the  canister?
[*]Which  media  is  suggested  in  the  canister  for  better  performance?[list]

 1)  Water  change  required  when  Nitrate  levels  rise.  To  find  out  the  correct  time,  I  suggest  using  a  nitrate  test  kit  initially,  to  establish  a  rhythm.

 2)  The  canister  filter,  since  it  will  also  perform  biological  filtration,  needs  to  be  on  24x7,  except  the  few  minutes  that  it  takes  for  maintenance.  and  then  too  find  out  by  browsing  forums  and  google,  how  to  keep  the  bacteria  colony  alive  while  cleaning  filter  media.  (actually  keep  some  of  the  water  you  will  squeeze  out  of  the  sponges,  never  wash  or  rinse  the  ceramic  media,  and  rinse  the  sponges  only  in  tank  water  removed  from  the  tank.)

 3)  Only  time  will  tell  you  this.  You  need  to  look  out  for  signs  of  filter  efficacy  like:  if  the  outflow  of  the  filter  reduces  noticeably,  or  the  filtration  reduces,  etc.  etc.

 4)  A  canister  filter  comes  with  2  sponges/pads,  one  coarse  and  one  fine,  and  the  rest  is  either  or  a  combination  of  ceramic  pieces  to  establish  the  bacteria  colony,  activated  carbon  to  remove  chemicals  or  smells  (totally  optional),  and  maybe  some  peat  moss  to  control  pH  if  you  are  getting  variations.

Googling  threads  on  various  forums,  youtube  videos  and  personal  advice  from  experienced  people  is  what  will  help  you  out.  To  find  out  an  experienced  person,  ask  only  if  he  believes  in  the  nitrogen  cycle.  If  he  does,  then  maybe  you  can  trust  him.  If  he  does  not,  then  whatever...

for  a  bare  bottom  tank,  you  have  very  less  space  for  the  bacteria  to  grow.  please  do  not  wash  your  canister  filter  media  is  washed  with  tank  water  (and  not  with  tap  water).  else  your  tank  will  need  recycling.  you  may  like  to  read  more  about  Nitrogen  Cycle.

Rest  as  suggested  by  Shelly  and  others.

 Hello  Nik,

Below  are  my  two  cents  when  it  comes  to  SUNSUN.

~  For  any  reason,  if  you  do  not  run  the  canister  (may  be  for  more  than  a  month  or  so)  then  do  remove  the  O-rings  from  the  upper  lid  of  canister.  Leaving  it  there  for  long  will  lead  to  the  loosening  of  the  o-ring  and  that  would  cause  leakages  on  all  the  sides  of  the  canister  once  you  start  using  it  again.

~  While  cleaning  the  canister,  do  not  remove  the  impeller  which  would  look  like  a  Fan  at  the  bottom  of  the  top  lid.  These  are  made  of  cheap  plastics  and  just  a  fall  on  the  floor  would  break  the  stem.

Good  thing  is,  both  can  be  purchased  again.  I  had  experienced  both  the  above  mentioned  points  and  got  a  new  one  from  AQUASTAR  chennai.

 Regards,
 Vin

Okay  guys  thx  for  the  replies
I  just  got  my  new  canister
and  i  was  looking  up  info  on  how  to  place  the  media  given  to  me
and  i  was  like   Shocked     Surprised

i  got  some  sponges  (50  ppi  and  30ppi  as  per  the  box)
ceramic  rings  and  bio  balls(I  do  not  know  what  this  is  used  for)
aquatic  clay  balls(I  do  not  know  what  this  is  used  for)
now  i  saw  couple  of   videos  on  you  tube   ppl  use   the  sponges  at  the  bottom  of  thecanister  as  according  to  them   the  water  flows  in  from  bottom  to  the  top
but  i  am,  not  sure  if  they  right   Confused
so  this  is  how  i  set  my  media
i  know  it  is  wrong  from  what  i  can  see  Oops
 from  bottom   to  top
   ceramic  rings
 aquatic  clay
 then  sponge
as  i  think  my  canister  motor  is  on   my  canister  head
   but  am  not  sure  please
can  any  one  clarify  this  out
the  other  sites  and  forums   make  me  feel  humiliated  and  dont  answer  my  questions  with  proper  answers
but  instead  thet  answer  me  in  such  a  way  that  i  feel  they  are  making  fun  of  me  or  taunt  me
 Thx

 Hi  Nicks,
Sorry  to  hear  about  the  humiliation  part..  but  don't  get  discouraged.  Its  just  a  matter  of  time  before  you  learn  the  basics.
Well,  coming  to  the  point  of  your  Canister  media,  sponge  acts  as  mechanical  filters  and  the  clay  balls  and  ceramic  rings  act  as  Biological  filters.
You  already  have  the  correct  sequence  of  the  media  set  up..  from  bottom   to  top  -  ceramic  rings  -  aquatic  clay  -  coarse  sponge  -  fine  sponge.
The  idea  is,  since  the  flow  is  from  bottom  to  top,  most  of  the  bigger  particles  will  settle  at  the  bottom  of  the  canister  where  we  have  ceramic  rings.  so  the  dirt  will  not  be  chocking  the  filter  as  the  gaps  between  the  ceramic  rings  are  large.  in  the  next  stage  the  medium  sized  particles  will  be  caught  by  the  Clay  ball.  particles  which  are  fine  enough  to  escape  these  two  are  filtrated  out  buy  the  sponges..
The  basic  Idea  is  to  protect  the  pump  from  the  dirt,  which  might  choke  it.
If  the  sequence  of  media  is  reversed.  then  the  sponges  will  be  clog  at  much  faster  rate.  which  would  reduce  the  flow  rate,  hence  frequency  of  cleaning  the  filter  will  also  increase.

I  am  a  newbie  in  this  hobby  myself,  but  I  love  sharing  info  about  it,  and  helping  others  in  need.
Don't  worry,  most  people  will  smirk  at  you  since  you  don't  think  like  them,  but  some  will  be  genuine  helpers  such  as  those  on  this  forum.

Based  upon  my  study  (actually  online  reading)  of  the  nitrogen  cycle  and  its  role  in  a  good  aquarium,  I  convinced  3-4  of  my  friends  to  buy  a  filter,  or  upgrade  to  a  better  filter.  Based  upon  some  research  about  fish  compatibility,  I  advised  some  friends,  and  still  my  decision  to  keep  male  endlers  and  male  guppies  together  backfired  spectacularly.  So,  I  am  learning,  and  at  the  same  time,  I  am  trying  to  help  others.

We  are  here  to  help  you,  your  hobby  and  your  fishes.

 Cheers!
 -nwk.

Bio  balls  are  also  intended  for  biological  filtration,  It  is  designed  in  such  a  way  that  it  has  large  surface  area  so  that  it  can  harbor  large  number  of  beneficial  bacteria  comparatively  which  breaks  down  nitrogen..
