can  we  buy  sodium  hypochlorate  from  chem  store  and  use  it  for  bleaching  purigen

Don't  have  idea  about  the  but  seachem  recommend  the  below

Use  regular  8.25%  hypochlorite  household  bleach  (non-scented,  no  dyes,  do  not  use  a  splash-less  bleach)

So  i  guess  you  can  use  if  it  meets  the  above  criteria.

Better  to  post  this  question  in  the  forum  of  Seachem  and  let  them  answer,  instead  of  we  guessing  it   Smile.  And  secondly  even  I  have  a  question  as  how  it  reacts  with  fertilizers     Shocked  .  Most  of  the  hobbyist  having  planted  setup  dose  fertz  frequently.

 REF:  http://www.seachem.com/support/forums/showthread.php?t=4148&highlight=EDTA

I  would  suggest  people  with  planted  setup  not  to  invest  in  this  product.  Though  there  it  might  be  good  but  at  the  downside  it  seems  too  risky.  A  well  scheduled  frequent  water  change  will  take  care  of  keeping  nitrate  and  impurity  level  low  and  to  top  investing  on  a  good  filter  will  keep  the  water  crystal  clear.  Not  worth  the  risk   Thumb Down

I  have  used  Bleaching  powder   with  water  to  regenerate  Purigen.
In  such  cases  I  observed  slight  pink  n  brownish  color   even  after  regeneration.
On  the  other  hand  when  I  used  industrial  bleaching  powder  like  one  used  for  swimming  pools  then  after  regeneration  the  Purigen  become  as   good  as  white  new.

Seachem  is  useful  when  you  are  very  particular  about  water  look  and  feel.
Purigen  ,activated  carbon  and  Soft  water  in  proper  combination  will  make  display  tank  look  amazing  as  if  fish  are  floating  in  air  as  seen  in  many  display  tank  videos  for  discus.

Another  option  for  crystal  clear  water  is  very  high  and  over  filtration.

 Hi  Andrew,

In  a  5  compartment  Canister  filter,  what  are  the  filter  media  that  is  advisable?

In  my  DoPhin1650,  I  have  put  the  following  (listing  from  bottom  to  top):
 1.  Sponge  (Came  with  the  filter)
 2.  Activated  Carbon  (Came  with  the  filter)
 3.  Ceramic  Rings  (Came  with  the  filter)
 4  &  5.  Ceramic  Rings  (Bought  separately)

Also,  as  per  "arun_chak"  I  use  CSM.  Haven't  you  faced  any  such  issues?

Lastly,  how  long  does  the  Purigen  last  before  you  have  to  regenerate  for  your  tank?

 Thanks,
 Karthik

yes  you  can  use  in  planted  aquarium  you  can  find  lot  of  review  videos  in  youtube,  I'm  using  in  my  225litre  and  75litre  planted  tank,  it  never  affect  your  fert  dosing  only  some  EDTA  product  with  amine  based  used  to  make  purigen  powerless.  i'm  dosing  EI  method  with  csm+B  and  flourish  never  had  any  issues.

Hi  i  always  follow  eheim  and  pondguru  method  which  is  more  efficient.

mine  is  eheim  2215  and  sunsun  304  where  water  flows  from  down  to  top  most  of  the  filter  are  like  this

 1.  ceramic  rings

 2.  24mm  coarse  filter  foam  and  in  middle  10-12mm  medium  filter  foam  and  top  layer  with  fine  filter  foam

 3.  bio-media  (  i  use  eheim  substrat  pro)

 4.  bio-balls

 5.  bio  balls  and  seachem  purigen  with  fine  filter  foam  on  top

i  clean  all  the  materials  with  my  tank  water  only  don't  wanna  miss  my  bacteria  babies  in  foam  also  Chuckle

I'm  dosing  EI  method  with  csm+b  and  flourish  never  had  any  issues.

it  depends  on  tank,  i  used  to  clean  my  filter  once  in  a  month  and  if  i  see  my  purigen  turns  into  dark  brown  then  i  will  regenerate  it.

Below  is  a  video  link  for  setting  canister  filter  media  hope  it  will  help  you  Smile

Use  a  stocking  as  a  bag  for  purigen  but  make  sure  its  a  good  quality  one  as  they  have  a  finer  mesh.  The  cheaper  size  will  allow  some  of  the  finer  granules  to  go  through
