Wow!  Awesome  setup.  I  will  also  so  a  full  LED  in  future  when  my  current  tubes  expire.  Are  you  using  diy  co2  or  pressurized?

Clapping   really  cool  build  there  and  nice  colors  in  the  tank  too.

Goes  to  show  one  doesn't  need  to  be  highly  professional  to  build  such  fixtures...  You  just  make  it  look  so  simple.

 Please  keep  us  regularly  updated.

No  problem  thank  you  for  replying
Your  tank  looks  just  superb  and  I  am  loving  the  look.  Btw  it  looks  much  more  cool  with  trimming
btw  the  question  I  wanted  to  ask  was  the  same  as  Asheesh  asked  in  that  post  of  yours,  so  I  am  gona  watch  the  replies  to  resolve  my  doubts

Nice....so  you  LED  is  successful  for  your  tank.

I  also  thinking  about  mine.  For  my  24"x15.5"(lxb)  tank  how  many  LED  is  needed  !!  And  also  what's  the  wattage  !!

 Thanks  in  advance.

 Thanks  in  advance.

The  formula  used  is  Numbers  of  LED  to  use  =  The  area  of  footprint  of  your  tank  /  22  which  is  for  3watt  cree  led  or  equivalent  quality.
 eg  my  tank  is  l=36  and  b=18,  so  36*18  =  648,  so  648/22=29.4  lets  keep  30,  30  X  3  (3  watt  led)=  90watt,  where  i  used  10watt  led  so  for  my  tank  9  nos  10watt  led.

Where  i  like  very  high  light  so  went  with  14nos  led  where  6  leds  is  connected  to  dimmer  and  kept  the  6nos  in  50%  intensity,  according  to  the  plants  which  i  replace,  i  will  increase  or  decrease  the  intensity.

 for  your  tank  24*15.5  =  372,  no  of  led  =  372/22  =  16.9  lets  keep  17,  17  X  3  =  51watts

so  if  you  use  3w  you  need  17  r  18  nos  3watt  led
5watt  led  means  10  or  11  nos  required

 Hi  Andrew,

I  had  a  question,  when  you  use  a  500  W  SMPS,  would  the  Power  consumed  be  500W  all  the  time  or  does  it  depend  upon  the  load.  I  do  not  know  how  this(SMPS)  works,  so  asking  this  question.

Using  an  SMPS  to  drive  LED's  is  an  ingenious  idea,  they  are  available  fairly  easily  and  don't  cost  too  much  when  compared  to  Drivers.  They  also  come  with  a  warranty  which  is  an  added  advantage,  since  these  can  be  procured  locally  they  can  be  taken  back  if  they  get  spoilt.

NO  it  wont,  it  will  consume  according  to  your  output,  but  led  mainly  you  need  to  focus  on  amp  if  your  led  is  10w  12v  1A  then  calculate  the  total  amp  required  for  your  led  light  then  check  with  your  psu,  most  of  the  psu  supports  12v  24A  so  if  you  can  use  24  10w  leds  so  your  total  power  consumption  comes  only  240w,  balance  goes  to  3.4v  and  5v  in  smps

Say  for  example  I  am  using  only  10  led  in  parallel.  I  would  need  only  10  amps.  For  this  how  do  I  make  the  circuit?

when  you  smps  say  it  can  give  12v  24A  and  you  using  only  10nos  10w  led  with  12v  10A  total  your  led  will  consume  only  10A  max  it  will  take  what  it  requires  only  so  no  worries  and  no  need  any  separate  circuit

Andrew  wrote  (View  Post):

Like  i  said  I'm  using  CPU  SMPS  my  10w  led  is  Dc12V  and  need  1Amp  so  i  require  20A  for  20  led  my  SMPS  support  12v  24A  and  it  also  got  3v  and  5v  you  can  see  in  below  pic,

If  your  LEDs  are  10W  and  need  12V,  won't  the  current  be  830mA  approx?

Are  you  not  wiring  your  LEDs  in  series?  If  so,  current  remains  the  same  in  a  series  circuit.  So,  you  are  not  giving  1A  to  each  LED  here,  but  20A  to  each  LED.  Every  LED  is  rated  to  work  at  a  certain  current.
Only  Voltage  changes  in  a  series  circuit  based  on  the  resistors  )or,  LEDs  in  this  case).
Would  you  mind  explaining  a  little  more?  Did  you  connect  your  LEDs  directly  to  the  output  of  your  SMPS?  Or  are  you  using  any  LDD  drivers  between  your  SMPS  and  LEDs?

I  am  a  little  concerned  about  your  LEDs  and  other  people's  units  that  would  be  inspired  by  yours.

EDIT:  I  think  I  understand  it  now.  Saikumar  just  explained  to  me  that  it's  constant  voltage  not  constant  current.  So  the  circuit  takes  the  required  current  and  not  more  than  what's  needed.  Is  that  how  you  would  have  explained  it?  Or  do  you  have  any  other  possible  explanations?  Would  love  to  hear  your  POV!

If  you  want  to  learn  more  about  wiring  LEDs,  you  can  checkout  this  site.  The  author  replies  to  every  comment,  and  I  have  done  many  LED  circuits  from  this  website.
