 Hi  Guys,

I  am  planning  on  keeping  discus.  I  have  a  new  50  Gallon  which  I  restored.
Is  there  a  way  to  automate  the  water  change  and  maintain  a  temperature  of  28  deg.  This  is  worrying  me  as  I  do  not  want  wide  fluctuations  in  water  temperature.  I  have  been  looking  online  for  instant  water  heaters  etc  but  am  running  out  of  ideas.
What  is  recommended  usually  is  to  have  another  holding  tank  of  the  same  size,  heat  up  that  water  and  then  do  the  water  change.
I  do  not  have  the  place  to  keep  another  3  feet  aquarium  as  a  holding  tank.

Is  there  a  way  (DIY)  or  something  through  which  I  can  automate  the  water  change  while  still  maintaining  the  water  temperature  going  into  the  aquarium.

 Any  help  wold  be  appreciated.
Also  looking  out  for  good  quality  discus  6  nos  in  Bangalore.  If  anyone  knows  of  any  good  supplier  kindly  let  me  know.

 Warm  Regards
 Bharath

Do  you  have  space  for  a  sump/  spare  tank  ?  You  can  make  an  automatic  WC  system  using  that.  It  will  also  have  space  for  a  heater  and  will  maintain  constant  and  similar  temp  to  the  display  tank  since  it  is  in  the  same  room

If  regular  water  change  can  be  at  25-30%,  then  a  lot  of  temperature  and  PH  fluctuation  can  be  avoided.  No  need  to  think  about  other  automated  solutions.

Alternately  storing  water  in  a  separate  storage,  either  an  additional  tank  or  container  in  the  similar  surrounding,  can  be  options.

 Hi  All,

Yes  I  plan  on  doing  regular  water  changes....  I  thought  of  doing  more  than  30%  because  I  believe  it  affects  the  growth...
Please  correct  me  if  my  understanding  is  right  so  far.

If  I  do  regular  water  changes  of  about  30%  and  basically  keep  things  clean  I  should  be  good...  I  have  a  bare  bottom  tank,  so  siphoning  off  any  left  over  food  immediately  after  a  feed  should  keep  the  discus  happy...

So  3  to  4  feeds  a  day  with  about  the  same  number  of  clean  ups...  wth  room  temperature  water  should  be  ok

 Please  update  your  location.

If  its  bare  bottom  tank  then  you  need  to  dechlorinate  the  water  and  store  it  ofr  atleast  24  hrs  and  then  do  the  water  change.

This  is  best  for  discus  tank

 HI  All,

Well  here  is  the  progress  I  have  made  so  far.

I  bought  7  beauties  yesterday...  they  are  just  settling  in.

I  have  a  BBT  -  No  Drift  wood.  Only  Sponge  Filter,  Heater  (Set  at  26  Deg)...  results  in  a  steady  28  Deg  on  my  Thermometer.

Main  Tank  is  3ft  x  1.5ft  x  1.5ft.  The  bottom  panel  was  cracked  and  one  side  panel  was  cracked.  Replaced  both  panels  myself...  my  first  panel  change.  Replaced  the  Side  Panel  with  extra  clear  glass  :)

Sump  tank  -  2ft  x  1ft  x  1ft  -  Also  has  a  sponge  filter  -  buying  a  heater  and  thermometer  for  this  tank  as  well.

Day  0  -  Water  in  the  Aquarium  was  cycled  for  about  3  Days  by  now  on  Spunge  Filters,  which  were  first  run  on  ADA  Bacter  100  For  1  week  for  cycling.  (Dont  know  if  this  was  necessary  but  did  it  any  way  ....  I  love  Bacter  100  Smile)

Also  have  been  treating  the  tank  for  the  last  one  week,  along  with  my  other  3ft  fully  planted  with  Levamisole

->  Changed  40  %  of  water  about  3  hours  before  I  brought  the  discus  home.
->  Heater  was  switched  off  water  was  at  room  temperature
->  Acclimatized   the  fish  and  let  them  into  the  main  tank.
->  Kept  lights  out  throughout,  And  did  not  feed  them
 ->  No  Water  Change

Day  1  -  1st  feed  at  5:30  am...  very  little  Australian  Black  Worms.  They  ate  it  up....but  very  slowly
1st  Water  change  &  Clean  up
Re-filled  sump  and  put  Sponge  filter  on  in  Sump
Turned  the  heater  on  in  the  main  tank.....  temperature  went  up  to  28  Deg...  they  got  Hungry
11:30  am...  2nd  Feed.  They  ate  it  up  ...  but  a  little  faster  and  with  me  sitting  a  little  closer  Smile
1:30  pm...  3rd  Feed.  They  ate  well....  with  me  around  in  the  same  room....getting  used  to  me  i  guess
5:30  pm....  4th  Feed.  Again  they  ate  well.
2nd  Water  change  after  4th  Feed  ...  reduced  the  water  level  in  the  main  tank,  to  about  50  %  (No  Point  in  Wasting  water)
So  Changing  about  30%  of  the  50%  in  the  tank...

They  seem  to  be  doing  fine...

 No  more  feeds  tonight...

Hmm..  well,  this  is  the  first  time  im  keeping  Discus...  so  am  hoping  that  im  doing  the  best  for  the  fish.

Repeated  the  same  routine  today  and  did  3  water  changes....  today...  2nd  one  was  about  90%  change.

The  Fish  seem  to  be  happy...  :)

If  im  doing  something  wrong,  kindly  let  me  know  and  I  will  alter  the  routine.
