 Hello  All,

I'm  Manikandan  from  Chennai  and  I'm  new  to  IAH.  Due  to  a  tight  budget,  I  have  planned  to  go  with  Walstad  planted  Tank  after  researching  and  studying  about  it  for  the  past  3  months.
I'm  planning  on  36X18X18  tank.  I  came  across  an  organic  manure  recently  available  near  to  my  place  with  its  nutrient  specifications.  Please  could  you  advise  would  it  be  suffice  to  go  with  it  or  request  you  to  provide  some  substrate  suggestions  and  DIY  fertilizers.

Also,  please  advise  on  CO2  and  how  to  keep  my  aquarium  cool  since  Chennai  will  be  hot  for  most  of  the  time.  Thank  you.

Just  use  soil  and  gravel.  Don't  use  any  kind  of  organic  fertilizer  or  manure.  Walstad  style  tanks  dont  use  CO2  supplementation.  Really  decide  on  whether  you  want  to  go  hi  tech  or  low  tech,  IME  a  mix  and  match  of  different  methods  has  never  helped.  Decide  on  a  method  and  stick  to  it.  Dont  get  carried  away  and  add  CO2  or  high  lights.  you  have  decided  on  a  walstad  type  tank.  stick  to  its  principles.

 Hello  Preetham,

Thanks  for  your  advise.  Smile   I  could  not  able  to  find  the  suitable  soil  here  that  can  be  used  as  substrate.  Can  you  also  help  me  with  finding  a  right  one?

Can  you  also  advise  on  maintaining  of  temperature  of  the  tank?  Chillers  are  way  too  expensive.  Thank  you.

check  with  the  nursery  if  they  have  red  soil,  a  one  inch  layer  topped  by  1.5  to  2  inches  of  gravel  will  do.  For  cooling  use  a  CPU  fan,  run  it  using  one  of  the  old  mobile  chargers...or  freeze  some  water  bottles  over  night  and  drop  it  in  the  tank  during  the  day.

 Hi  Manikandan

exactly  what  will  you  do  while  creating  Walstad  method?  I  mean  how  will  you  apply  the  walstad  method  ?

 Hi  Garothmaan,

I'm  sorry  I  dont  know  whether  I  understood  your  question  properly.  As  far  as  my  understanding,  Walstad  method  is  to  create  ecological  balance  in  the  aquarium  without  any  high  tech  additives  like  CO2,  fertilizers  and  high  power  lights.  It  can  be  created  by  growing  plants  which  would  absorb  ammonia,  nitrite  and  nitrates  which  are  harmful  to  fishes.
Fishes  will  keep  plants  healthy  by  providing  nutrients  through  their  wastes  and  can  provide  Co2  that  will  help  pant's  growth.
The  growth  may  be  slow  but  will  be  steady  and  this  is  cost  effective  as  well.
Your  suggestions  would  be  valuable  to  me.  Thank  you.

 Mani

Walsted  suggested  using  garden  soil  which  can  be  dug  up  from  local  areas..
She  also  suggested  that  it  should  have  no  organic  matter  in  it..
Ideally  the  soil  source  must  be  2-3  feet  below  surface  to  avoid  organic  matter..
Then  this  soil  must  be  mineralised  to  minimise  the  harmful  nutrients  leeching  in  to  the  water  column.

Thank  you  Nidhi.  I  will  do  the  mineralisation  process  as  you  suggested.

Preetam  suggested  me  to  go  with  red  soil  that  is  available  in  nursery.  I  do  not  see  any  packed  topsoil  availabe  here  in  India  and  also  good  soil  without  any  inorganic  fertilizers  in  my  area.

I  have  a  doubt  with  it  now,  would  red  soil  be  suffice  to  supply  nutrients  at  the  initial  and  also  at  later  part  say  for  some  root  feeders  like  Crypt,  Vallis  and  Swords?  Does  it  have  a  good  CEC?  Or  do  I  need  to  add  anything  along  with  it?

 Mani,

Red  soil  is  basically  used  for  its  high  iron  content..
Yes,  any  soil  will  have  high  CEC..  So  red  soil  can  be  used..
Finally,  I  have  grown  all  these  crypts,  Amazons,  Vals  with  just  sand  as  substrate  in  my  earlier  days  in  low  light,  without  Co2  and  nor  fertilizer  were  dosed..  So,  they  dont  need  any  extra  addition  in  the  soil  at  least  for  a  couple  of  years..

Thank  you  so  much.  On  the  gravel  side,  I  believe  a  size  of  5mm  would  be  good.  Can  you  suggest?

Can  I  use  Drift  wood  or  rocks  for  Anubias  or  Ferns  &  moss  as  I  see  Walstad  dont  encourage  it  as  it  will  make  soil  anaerobic?  That  would  be  a  beautiful  addition  too...

I'm  planning  to  plant  hair  grass  at  few  part  of  the  tank,  not  a  carpet.  Can  someone  from  Chennai  can  help  me  to  get  a  good  gravel  for  walstad  tank?

Rocks  can  be  left  out,  driftwood  are  recommended.
3mm  to  5mm  gravel  or  sand  is  better..  Best  is  river  sand.
Sure,  Hairgrass  will  grow  in  these  conditions..  But,  yes  don't  expect  a  thick  carpet..

Thank  you  again  Nidhi.  I  have  also  planned  on  DIY  PLL.

Thanks  all  for  your  expert  advise.  I  will  keep  posting  the  updates  once  I  start  to  build  my  tank.

Don't  expect  hair  grass  to  grow  much,  it  will  really  be  like  hair  on  a  bald  man,  never  enough!  Chuckle   Chuckle   Chuckle
