I was thinking of following your build....
I already got the LED's, The rest of the hardware is in transit. Will build it over this week end or next week endbased on the arrival of all the parts. |

I have the following options to build the LED array. Each box represents one LED. Which option is better? I am building two units for two tanks. I don't mind experimenting with having different orientations on each unit.
Red and Blue Boxes represent red and blue LED's
I need to get the heat sink. I need to understand how much space i need to leave between LED's All of them are 1 W LED's. Max length of the heat sink can be 24 inches, I need to know how wide it needs to be to accommodate 3 columns of LED.
The current Plan is to use a 2 or 3 mm aluminium Sheet as a heat sink. If I get a proper heat sink with fins how wide should it be? |

As suggested by nidhi, spacing between two led's should be 2 inches max. I would suggest you to use Option -2 as it will spread light of various spectrum into the entire tank.
For heat sink you may use aluminium section window frame. (might be cheaper than conventional heat sink)
Are going to use lens, acrylic sheet etc ? |

@ Preeths,
Yes 2x2 inch matrix will be best, That would mean you would need a plate of 6 inches by 18 inches if you consider leaving an inch of space on edges.. so 6 inches wide and length can go up to 24 inches to accommodate any mounting arrangement.
I think option-3 will be good. |

One suggestion (although not asked ) test the LEDs prior to install no hood. BTW which type of connection you are using series or parallel ? Have you added Potentiometer to control intensity(Brightness) of LED ? |

I am not using potentiometers. Using a serial connection. Its working now but got a shock. Have to see where the short is happening. |
