I  have  had  a  few  fish  tanks  before.  I  am  still  a  beginner  and  would  like  a  lot  of  help  and  support  for  setting  up  my  1st  Tank.  I  would  want  a  planted  tank  as  i  already  have  had  a  few  normal  tank  setup  had  to  leave  it  as  the  office  i  had  was  given  on  rent.  I  still  have  3  tanks  non  fucntional  4ft  with  8mm  glass  4.5ft  with  6mm  glass  3ft  with  8mm  glass.

I  want  to  do  it  in  the  3ft  tank  so  would  like  suggestion  on  how  do  i  go  about.
Anyone  from  mumbai  would  be  very  nice  to  meet  and  discuss  maybe  with  a  fellow  hobbist.

 Tank  basics
 Lightning
 Substrate
 Plants

I  am  kinda  on  a  little  tight  on  budget  so  i  really  don't  know  where  i  am  going  with  this.

Start  can  be  slow  but  i  can  invest  a  little  time  to  time.

I  am  kinda  on  a  little  tight  on  budget  so  i  really  don't  know  where  i  am  going  with  this.

Start  can  be  slow  but  i  can  invest  a  little  time  to  time.

Tank  basics:-  Bigger  is  better,  because  large  sized  tanks  are  more  stable  in  every  manner.  Size  specified  by  you  is  OK.  Please  do  not  add  fish  until  the  tank  gets  cycled  this  period  takes  20-30  days  after  plantation.   You  need  to  change  80%  of  water  prior  to  adding  fish  &  25-30%  water  once  every  week  depending  on  plant  density  &  bio-load.

Lightning:-  LEDs,  T5,  T8  are  the  best  options.  But  if  you  are  seeking  for  cost  effective  ones,  i  would  recommend  PLL.  You  can  also  go  for  DIY  Cree  LED  hood,  if  you  have  somewhat  knowledge  of  electronics  especially  soldering.

Substrate:-  To  me  laterite  has  shown  good  results,  you  will  get  it  easily  in  Mumbai.  On  other  hand  you  can  also  go  for  ADA  Amazonia.  The  plus  with  laterite  is  rich  of  iron,  if  you  are  planning  for  red/yellow  colored  plants  then  you  should  choose  laterite.  You  don't  even  need  to  add  Fe  for  initial  few  months.  If  you  willing  for  carpet,  go  for  ADA  Amazonia  however  to  grow  carpet  is  not  a  job  for  Beginner.

Plants:-  Now  a  days  tissue  cultured  plants  are  more  demanded.  They  bit  costly  but  healthy  and  do  not  come  with  snails  or  algae.  For  tissue  cultured  plants  visit  Tropico  Aqua  or  still  water  aquatics.  Other  way  can  purchase  farmed  plants  online  but  minimum  amount  should  around  500-700Rs.  depends  on  seller.  Sreepadma.com  is  good  online  place  to  purchase  plants.
I  would  recommend  easier  plants  like  Java  fern,  Hydrila,  vallisneria  nana,  sagittaria  subulata,  cabomba  caroliniana,  rotala  rotundifolia  green  etc.

 Best  luck  Thumb Up

I  see  nothing  wrong  in  a  beginner  using  ADA  Substrate,  as  long  as  he  has  got  the  basics  right..

I  am  kinda  on  a  little  tight  on  budget  so  i  really  don't  know  where  i  am  going  with  this.

Start  can  be  slow  but  i  can  invest  a  little  time  to  time.

I  would  ask  you  to  first  go  through  basics  of  keeping  fish  keeping,  nitrogen  cycle,  tips  on  keeping  fish  healthy.  Later  you  go  through  the  basics  of  planted  aquariums.  Types  of  substrates,  fish  for  planted  tank,  plants,  lighting,  filtration,  Carbon  Dioxide  setup  etc.

Once  you  get  a  hang  of  basics  well  and  when  you  feel  confident,  you  can  procure  the  materials  required  as  per  your  budget  to  make  your  own  setup.

As  of  now  just  don't  rush  to  setup  your  tank  without  having  basic  knowledge,  as  initial  failure  will  not  help  in  keeping  your  excitement  level  high  for  the  hobby.

 +1  with  Nidhi.
ADA  is  good  for  beginners  also,  few  of  my  friends  have  got  good  result.  What  is  negative  side  of  ADA  ?  At  least  it  is  many  times  better  than  ordinary  river/garden  mud  which  becomes  inactive  within  short  period  of  time.
