I  have  not  read  a  better,  simpler,  and  more  complete  explanation  for  what  and  why  one  should  wait  when  setting  up  a  Marine  Tank.

Simply  Superb.  If  you  rush  your  Marine  tank  after  reading  this  -  Well,  no  one  can  help  you!

 Hi  All,

This  was  definitely  a  good  article.  I  am  also  in  the  process  of  starting  the  marine  tank  which  is  under  cycling  process  &  I  will  try  to  follow  the  procedure  mention  by  Eric.

But  one  thing  I  was  not  able  to  understand  is  about  using  Bacteria  culture  to  quicker  the  cycling  time.  What  author  wants  to  say  from  below  sentence?

Anyone  with  a  passing  knowledge  of  microbiology  would  realize  that  for  a  product  to  contain  live  bacteria  in  a  medium  that  sustains  it  would  quickly  turn  into  a  nearly  solid  mass  of  bacteria,  and  if  the  medium  is  such  that  it  keeps  them  inactive,  then  the  amount  of  bacteria  in  a  bottle  is  like  adding  a  grain  of  salt  to  the  ocean  compared  to  what  is  going  to  happen  quickly  in  a  tank  with  live  rock  in  it.

Is  he  saying  that  Bacteria  cultures  are  useless?

There  are  people  who  are  using  them  with  good  results  (This  is  what  they  claim).  Is  it  worth  to  invest  in  the  starter  culture  or  let  the  tank  mature  naturally.

 Hi  Madan

 That  article  is  fantastic.

To  be  frank  I  have  never  had  a  marine  setup  and  for  the  moment  a  marine  is  way  to  far  in  the  distant  future  for  me.

I  have  always  felt  the  same  about  freshwater  tanks  too.  Maybe  because  freshwater  fish  are  more  tolerant  of  these  swings  in  water  chemistry  we  dont  realise  all  this  happening.

This  article  is  also  points  out  the  reason  why  I  am  so  paranoid  about  antibiotics  in  the  aquarium.

 Hi

 @Coral_draw

Yes,the  author  pretty  much  says  there  are  much  better  ways  of  starting  off  your  cycle  than  bacteria  in  a  bottle.

IMO,your  live  rock  will  provide  all  the  required  bacterial  cultures  for  your  tank...  If  you  are  going  for  a  fish  only, you  could  start  off  your  bacteria  colony  by  transferring  some  filter  media  or  gravel  from  another  mature  disease  free  system.

The  stuff  that  you  get  in  bottles  most  probably  contains  a  few  spores  and  a  lot  of  nutrients.  It's  your  choice  whether  you  want  to  try  it  or  stick  to  the  alternatives  discussed  above!

 Happy  reefing!

 regards

 Arvind
