Use  acrylic  sheets  cut  to  size  for  the  hood.
You  can  glue  plastic  hinges  on  to  the  cover.

Here  is  a  good  practical  designer  hood.
Hand  made  simple  design  by  Deepak.
 Stainless  steel  sheet  hand  bent.
 Rubber  wood  sides.
 Four  tubes  inside.
Seperate  four  switches,  fuses  and  all  the  chokes  in  another  wooden  panel  near  the  electrical  plug  point.

Its  only  the  design  that  is  considered.  The  Watts  and  size  is  to  be  kept  according  to  your  need.

 Hi,

I  couldn't  see  the  pics  that  Trevor  posted  but  sounds  a  little  too  large  for  a  12"  tank  Smile

I  would  suggest  a  wooden  frame  over  the  tank  sitting  on  the  lip  of  the  tank
Two  sides  and  the  back  covered.
Top  and  front  -  as  a  single  piece  hinged  at  the  back.

You  could  have  a  single  11  or  8  watt  CFL  fixed  to  the  top  section...wiring  will  be  easy

Use  thin  plywood  to  make  the  sides  and  paint  it  well  before  use...

Of  course  all  this  will  take  a  little  bit  of  carpentry  -  but  very  enjoyable  to  get  something  done  yourself.

 HTH,
 Venkat
