I  have  a  planted  tank  21inches  X  12  inches  in  which  i  have  the  following

Sand  (  Which  we  get  in  the  local  shops,  it  contains  sea  shells  in  it)
 Hanging  Filter
Fishes  -  Â Goldfish,  black  moulies,  guppies,  swordtail,  Platies.
Plants  -  hydrilla,  Java  ferns,  Lilly,  Hair  grass,  Amazon,  Red  Cyrptocornetc.

The  Question  is  my  fishes  are  well  doing  in  this  but  my  plants  are  not  growing  properly  that  is  the  leave  are  not  stronger.  i  wanted  to  know  Â the  reason  for  this.

What  should  be  done  to  grow  it  stronger  and  what  are  the  basic  things  that  i  need  to  do  first

 Regards

First  and  foremost  you  need  to  stop  worrying  about  your  plants  and  get  your  fish  combo  right...goldfish  platies  mollies  and  guppies  is  absolutely  the  wrong  combination..the  gold  fish  need  to  go  as  the  tank  is  going  to  get  small  for  them  and  will  be  miserable  with  the  rest  of  the  fish  troubling  them..Either  keep  a  dozen  good  quality  guppies  or  keep  the  platies  and  mollies...
Plants  wont  grow  too  well  in  that  golden  sand  of  yours..your  best  option  would  be  to  rip  the  tank  up..and  put  in  some  laterite  and  cover  it  with  fine  sand..u  can  even  add  co2  to  your  tank...its  been  discussed  in  detail  in  some  of  the  older  threads  here

 Hi  Sharath

When  it  comes  to  a  planted  tank  its  a  lot  of  things  that  go  into  it.  You  have  given  only  2  dimensions  for  the  tank,  its  difficult  to  gauge  the  vol  of  the  tank.  I'll  agree  with  hamza  in  terms  of  the  fish  combo  and  his  suggestion  for  the  substrate.  The  best  thing  to  do  is  to  put  some  gadern  soil  as  lower  layer(1  inch)  and  some  2-3mm  sand  on  top(2-3inch).  A  lot  depends  on  lighting,co2  and  fertilizers.  All  have  been  discused  in  threads  before,  look  it  up  and  then  if  you  have  any  specific  question  those  can  be  answered.
You  also  need  to  let  us  know  what  is  the  lighting  you  are  using  howmany  watts  and  for  how  many  hours.  How  long  have  you  had  this  set  up  for  etc.

    Regards
       Harshal.

 Happy  Deepavali

hi  and  thanks  to  your  suggestions.

As  hamza  told  for  the  fish,  should  I  shift  the  gold  fish  to  another  tank.  Actullay  I  have  2  tanks  the  other  one  is  about  2feet  X  1feet  X  1.5  Feet  hejght.  In  this  I  have  1  GoldFish,  2  Kissing  Gourami  and  1Shark  these  are  all  1.5  yrs  old  and  they  are  big  now.  My  worry  is  if  I  shift  the  goldfish  which  is  in  the  planted  tanks  will  these  fishes  harm  the  smaller  one.
And  related  to  laterite  and  sand.  What  kind  of  sand  I  need  to  put  and  I  wanted  to  know  more  about  laterite  because  this  is  my  first  planted  ever  since  3  years.

 And  thank  even  to  harshal

My  tank  height  is  1.5  Feet,  21  inches  in  length,  bredth  is  12  inches.

 Regards

Please  do  read  the  articles  here  and  on  the  net  on  fish  compatibility  and  plant  compatibility  and  their  requirements...  then  you  will  succeed...............   Thumb Up

 Mini
Sorry  to  keep  saying  this  the  fish  in  your  other  tank  are  all  wrong..that  kissing  gourami  is  going  to  trouble  your  goldfish  and  that  shark  grows  to  about  3  foot...would  suggest  u  give  away  your  fish  and  start  afresh

 Hi
The  capacity  of  your  tank  would  be  about  12  gallons
There  are  two  aspects  to  your  tank  that  come  to  my  mind
 (1)  Fish:  Goldfish  are  not  compatible  in  this  tank,  a  goldfish  needs  at  least  6  gallons,  they  also  get  bositrous  for  a  planted  tank,  your  plants  like  hair  grass  would  be  completly  uprooted  and  the  test  will  not  flourish.  They  are  also  at  a  danger  from  mollies  &  swordtails,  which  can  harress  them.Apart  from  them  mollies,  guppies,  swordtail  are  okay  for  this  tank.
(2)Plants:  Your  substrate  is  wrong  ordinary  sand  will  get  too  compact  and  plant  roots  will  die  off.  A  planted  substrate  will  be  about  2-3  mm  in  dia.  Coarse  sand,  hardwar  sand  are  good  for  planted  tanks,  laterite  is  a  good  additive  to  a  planted  tank,  take  care  that  it  does  not  get  into  water  column.
If  you  do  not  want  to  reset  the  tank,  plant  these  plants  in  pots  and  put  them  in  tank.
Planted  tanks  also  need  high  lights,  about  2-3  wats  per  gallon.
As  you  are  in  bangalore,  you  can  go  to  ASK  at  cubbon  park,  there  you  will  fins  a  lots  of  hobbyists  as  well  as  lots  of  stuff  with  good  advice.

you  did  not  mention  about  the  lighting  ..   whichi  s  the  most   important  criterion  for   good  plant  growth  ..  and  how  much  time  do  u  switch   it  on  if  u  have  one  ???   u  can  get  a  20  w  tube   and   power  it  on  for  some  hrs  evryday

For  plants  to  grow  you'll  need  at  least  10  hours  of  light  a  day. The   sand  will  have  to  be  replaced  with  gravel  and  if  you  are  in  Bangalore  you  can  easily  get  laterite  to  put  under  the  gravel.I  remember  laterite  being  available  very  cheap  at  the  nursery  I  went  to  with  Madan  and  Trevor  when  I  was  there  in  June.  The  sand  makes  the  water  too  hard  for  most  plants,  I  remember  having  the  same  trouble  for  years  before  I  found  out   what  was  wrong  as  all  the  LFS  would   tell  me  to  put  sand  or  marble  chips  and  that's  what  I  did  and  so  the  plants  never  grew

hi  and  thanks  for  your  suggestions  guys

I  totally  confused  about  sand  and  gravel.  Gravel  means  the  pebbles  or  which  one.  Can  you  people  tell  me  where  i  can  get  good  sand  and  good  gravel.

About  laterite  means  the  red  garden  soil  or  which  one

For  lighting  i  have  a  40  watt  milky  bulb.  This  will  be  for  12  hours.

 Once  again  thanks

 Sharath

You  can  use  the  Red  soil  that  you  find  @  places  where  there  is  digging  work  going  on...  Like  near  Flyover  construction  sites...  one  of  myb  friend  is  using  it  succesfully  in  his  planted  tank...  Smile
