“I  lost  My  Matured  planted  tank  completely  this  summer”,  “All  stems  rot  away  due  to  heat”

If  I  start  searching  IAH  forums,  I  will  get  these  above  strings  many  times  posted  by  me.  And  this  not  only  me,  many  of  us  faced  the  same  situation.

This  April  I  have  started  a  planted  tank  spending  lots  of  money  and  after  doing  lots  of  planning.  Even  I  was  lucky  enough  to  get  a  chiller  from  Bappa  to  keep  the  tank  running  during  summer.  But  could  not  defeat  my  poor  fate.  Ultimate  heat  and  rampant  power  cut  left  my  plants  rotting  when  it  started  looking  really  cool.

I  just  wanted  to  avoid  the  same  situation  again  and  again  and  wanted  to  make  my  own  plant  culture  so  I  can  have  a  good  varieties  of  plants  with  me  all  the  time,  use  them  whenever  I  want.  Top  of  that  I  want  to  keep  the  maintenance  and  environmental  interference  to  the  least.

After  looking  here  and  there,  I  found  the  solution  may  be  growing  them  emmersed  (For  most  of  the  species).  Low  maintenance,  fast,  strong  plants  to  fight  the  harsh  weather.

So  3  weeks  back,  I  have  started  my  first  emmersed  culture.  The  idea  is  to  make  a  stock  of  hard  to  get  and  costly  plants.

I  am  having  Staurogyne  sp.  Tropica  with  me  for  some  time.  In  winter  they  were  doing  good.  But  in  summer  I  almost  lost  them  and  left  with  3  melted  leafless  twigs.  So  I  started  the  culture  with  a  very  little  hope  in  an  ice  cream  box  and  some  used  Aquasoil.

Check  the  result  after  3  weeks.

Now  I  am  trying  to  find  out  some  space  in  my  balcony  so  I  can  put  up  a  bigger  setup  to  culture  some  more  species  like  HC  Cuba,  Staurogyne  sp.  Porto  Velho,  P.  helferi  etc

Will  keep  updating  the  thread.  If  you  have  any  emmersed  culture  running  with  you,  please  share  some  details  and  pictures.

i  grow  low  light  plants  in  the  backyard  as  well.  i  dont  really  know  the  names  but  they  are  fairly  easy  to  grow  and  dont  burn  out  in  the  summer.

 Tirtha

I  have  got  lot  of  HM  as  emmersed  growth  in  my  garden.  In  fact  that  has  become  weed  without  any  input  from  me.

In  past  I  had  HC  Cuba,  Glosso  and  Fern  as  emmersed  form.

I  took  a  plastic  tray  about  4"  height,  put  some  soil  with  humus  mixture  and  put  the  plants  from  my  tank.  I  poured  RO  water  to  make  them  submersed.  Covered  the  tray  with  a  plastic  transparent  sheet  and  then  allowed  the  water  to  evaporate  very  slowly.

Every  morning  I  used  to  spray  water  from  a  mist  bottle  to  keep  them  moist.

Alternatively,  put  some  submersed  cutting  of  stem  plants  like  star  grass,  rotala  etc.  in  water  filled  bucket  in  floating  condition.  Put  the  bucket  in  balcony  but  away  from  direct  sunrays.  After  few  days,  new  growth  will  form  as  emmersed  shoot.  Cut  those  shoots  and  put  as  emmersed  plant.

But  in  my  experience,  even  then  summer  temperature  plays  havoc  with  emmersed  growth  also.

 Regards

 Hi,

I  have  a  big  nursery  of  HC  running  for  the  last  5  months.  I  have  planted  them  on  office  plastic  trays  (those  that  cost  around  Rs  50  each).  Filled  up  with  aquasoil  and  just  planted  the  HC  stems.  In  around  9  weeks,  the  whole  trays  were  covered  with  growth.  I  have  4  trays  and  all  are  kept  outside  in  the  balcony  with  no  direct  sunlight  falling  on  them.  In  the  beginning  I  had  covered  one  of  the  trays  with  wrap  on  plastic  sheet  with  small  holes  for  air  circulation,  but  the  entire  HC  melted  away.  Most  likely  because  of  the  heat  inside  the  tray  due  to  the  plastic  sheet  (green  house  effect???).  Keep  the  trays  open,  although  this  will  make  it  necessary  to  water  the  trays  everyday  in  the  morning  and  the  evening.  I  use  a  mister  with  some  drops  of  Potassium  fertilizer  (Ferka  Balance  K).

Once  the  growth  is  lush,  the  frequency  of  watering  or  misting  will  go  down  (maybe  the  plants  will  retain/use  the  moisture  judiciously).  I  have  planted  the  emersed  growth  back  into  the  different  tanks  (submerged)  and  none  of  the  leaves  have  melted  away  but  have  grown  and  gone  to  establish  themselves  immersed.

 Cheers,

 Vijay.

Vijay...  thanks  for  the  inputs.  Thats  an  real  success.  I  think  Your  HC  melted  away  due  to  extra  high  moisture.  Once  they  will  get  the  immersed  growth,  we  need  to  reduce  the  moisture  ie  removing  the  top  cover.

 Hi  Vijay,

How  cool  are  your  summers?  you  updating  your  location  will  give  us  more  insight.

 Tirtha
 one  small  point(ever  poking  guy)
Low  maintenance,  fast,  strong  plants  to  fight  the  harsh  weather.  =  may  be  you  should  have  slow  growers.

How  does  Rajiv(scorpio)  grow  them  in  the  similar  temperatures?  I  suppose  its  more  of  powercuts  rather  than  your  summer  temp.  May  be  you  should  get  your  tank  insured  against  this.  Very Happy

 Good  luck  with  your  setup.

I  suppose  you  intended  to  post  "Going  Emmersed"?  Thumb Up

 Hi  Saikumar,

Based  at  Goa.  The  temperatures  in  May  June  reach  upto  34  degrees.  Now  with  the  rains,  they  have  come  down  to  the  high  20's.

 Vijay.

temp  does  not  matter  to  grow  HC  emmersed.  Sujoy  growing  HC  on  sand  directly  under  sunlight  here  for  last  2  years.

Sad  to  hear  about  your  tank.  It  was  gorgeous  in  its  early  days,  I  wonder  how  it  would  have  looked  at  its  full  glory.

And  how  about  doing  a  paludarium  now?

Tirthada,  good  start.  Can  it  be  done  with  normal  soil, latterite  etc?  Is  it  necessary  to  water  them  every  day  twice?
