Around  eight  inches  for  Phillips  true  lite  in  your  tank.  A  design  where  you  can  lift  or  lower  the  lights  would  be  an  added  advantage.

 Trevor,
I  have  my  tubes  Â just  3  inches  above  the  water  level.  Just  wanted  to  know  why  is  the  recommendation  for  8"....  But  note  that  i  have  partailly  covered  the  top  by  glass  just  at  the  place  where  turbulance  is  created.

The  question  of  top  glass  does  not  arise.  In  a  planted  tank  the  plants  at  least  some  of  them  have  to  come  out  to  flower.  And  you  need  to  put  your  full  hand  including  your  shoulder  to  get  to  the  bottom  of  your  plants  when  your  tank  like  Congo's  is  1.75  ft  deep.  The  eight  inches  hieght  will  also  not  obstruct  you  while  you  work  or  play  around  with  your  plants.

 The  flowering.
 Rufus's  planted  tank.
 Mayur's  planted  tank.

 Ok!!!
Got  you,  Since  my  lights  are  there  in  a  open  hood  and  i  take  hood  out  for  clearning  or  to  play  with  my  plants,  Thats  why  i  am  safe.  Also  my  plants  have  not  yet  come  out  of  water  yet  and  hence  i  am  safe  till  now  ibelieve.

Was  just  wondering  if  it  has  any  other  implications  and  hence  the  query.  Appritiate  your  responce  Trevor.
