 Dear  Guys,

I  am  an  hobbyist  having  Flowerhorn  and  redparrots.  Now  I  have  a  plan  of  going  for  Discus  and  ofcourse  ordered  for  a  pair  of  red  passion  &  red  and  white.

Now  I  have  a  problem  and  I  want  to  sort  it  out  before  receiving  the  pieces.

What  water  shall  I  use  ?  Metro  water  or  bore  water  or  packaged  drinking  water.

I  have  a  plan  of  starting  with  packaged  water,  but  my  friend  said  that  25%water  has  to  be  changed  every  2days.  It  may  not  be  affordable  fror  me  with  packaged  water  and  ofcourse  by  using  ph  reducer.

What  can  be  done?  My  bore  well  water  is  having  a  ph  of  8.4  and  ofcourse  metrowater  8.5  as  I  checked  with  a  ph  measuring  device.

I  want  to  know  whether  I  am  making  a  mistake  in  measuring  ph.  Can  you  guys  tell  me  the  procedure  and  ofcourse  an  affordable  way  of  maintaining  discus  particularly  the  water.

Pls  tell  me  all  the  necessities  I  must  have  in  tank  for  having  discus  and  for  its  maintainance.

 Very  urgent  pls.

 Regards
 Ramanan

 Jackson,

Your  pH  level  is  so  high  for  for  Discus.  Discus  requires  6.1  to  7.5  pH  level...  Thumb Up

I  will  suggest  you  to  install  a  Aquaguard  water  filter  with  a  Iron  Cutter  (water  softner)  or  use  Reverse  Osmosis  Machine  to  reduce  the  pH  level  and  hardness  of  tap  water.  Thumb Up

I  have  never  tried  this....  And  would  also  like  to  hear  from  experts.  You  can  try  a  Almond  leaves  sokaed  in  the  water  which  reduces  PH  and  the  aged  water  you  can  use  it  for  water  changes.

Again  a  word  of  caution  i  have  never  tried  this.

Jackson..i  would  not  change  the  ph  of  the  water...they  will  get  used  to  it..and  if  you  recieving  juviniles  they  will  grow  much  better  and  faster  in  slightly  hard  water..i  have  been  keeping  discus  for  a  while  now  and  i  have  never  ever  touched  the  water  chemistry.

Fully  agree  with  not  changing  the  ph  hamza,  but  above  8.5  is  pretty  much  high  for  ANY  discus,  leave  alone  reefs!

Like  Amod  asked,  how  exactly  are  you  measuring  your  water's  pH?
Just  to  check  your  pH  tester,  try  testing  some  distilled  water.  The  pH  should  show  up  as  7.0.   You  can  get  distilled  water  from  your  local  petrol  station.
