I did have a pair of awesome Rajapalayams with me. Unfortunately, both were quite energetic and boisterous which resulted in the male jumping a 6 foot compound wall and being run over by a truck.
I had to give away the female as she was pining a lot. The female was born deaf but would react to disturbances it could feel, like people walking nearby, tractors moving around, stuff like that.
Excellent watch dogs that maintained vigil all night. Hope I can find time to have a new pair sometime. |

While it is sad that indian dogs are 'forgotten',there happen to be good reasons. Most dog lovers live in an urban setting. And while many "established" breeds, though hunting or working types, have to a great extent, become "urbanised"...meaning they will get on well with the family. This is not so with most indian gaze hounds(mudhol/rampur).They tend to be very aloof/semi wild. They were kept for their ferocious, aggressive and independent nature.Even today rural folk keep these dogs....they are excellent hunters, but are better kept at a distance from family folk.
I can trust a cocker spaniel unknown to me,but not a mudhol hound.I would boldly pet the cocker, but namasthe from a distance for mudhols
But handled properly, mudhols can be a proud sight. It will take many years of careful breeding before an even temperament can be bred into the indegenous hounds of india. |

Murthy
While I appreciate your point of view, but I also think that we in India suffer from the syndrome "gharka murgi dahl barabar" (home made chicken is like lentil soup) and therefore although we do keep a lot of rottweilers and dobermanns in our urban settings, we don't care much to keep, let alone improve, our own indegenous breeds.
By the way, I have a cocker who is not too sure if she is a dog or a rabbit.
