 Hi  shankar,
Why  do  you  want  "imported"  clear  glass  when  plenty  is  available  in  INDIA?

The  imported  one  (  I  guess  it  as  marketing  gimmick  and  most  probably  this  glasses  are  also  made  in  India)  do  not  have  the  greenish  tinge..  you  really  need  to  see  the  two  glass  side  by  side  to  get  an  understanding  of  what  a  glass  clarity  should  be.  However  if  the  tank  is  for  a  planted  one...  I  guess  it  doesn't  make  much  of  a  difference..and  maybe  a  greenish  tinge  will  enhance  the  plant  color  Very Happy

the  imported  glass  which  shankar  is  talking  about  would  most  probably  be  a  low  iron  glass  also  popularly  called  "starphire  glass".  Its  the  iron  content  which  gives  the  greenish  tinge  to  the  glass,  so  removing  it  increases  the  clarity  of  the  glass.
Unless  the  tank  is  huge  and  the  thickness  of  the  glass  is  atleast  1  inch  there  wont  be  a  noticeable  difference.  Starphire  glass  is  quite  popular  among  refeers  in  US.

raghu...  i  donno  if  they  are  available  in  bangalore.
I  had  read  about  them  at  several  reef  forums.  Its  quite  new  in  US  and  there  is  always  debate  in  the  forums  whether  to  go  for  a  normal  glass  or  starphire  glass  as  the  cost  difference  between  them  is  quite  huge(  couple  of  hundred  dollars).

Guys  the  glass  is  called  as  'extra-clear  glass'  in  mumbai.

Yes,  the  iron  content  in  it  is  less,  thats  why  the  lack  of  green  colour.  It  very  costly  compared  to  ordinary  new  glass,  as  much  as  few  hundreds\sq  feet.  I  have  used  it,  and  personally  feel  that  it  makes  a  difference  only  if  the  tank's  very  big.

Also,  i  dont  have  a  scientific  say  on  this,  but  from  my  experience  this  glass  is  a  bit  fragile  compared  to  the  ordianry  one...gets  chipped  easily.

 Raghu,
This  one  is  very  much  available  in  Bangalore.  My  planted  tank  is  made  from  this  glass..  However  its  very  costly..almost  3-4  times  costly  than  ordinary  clear  glass.  To  cut  cost  I  have  only  used  this  glass  for  the  viewing  sides..  My  bottom  glass  and  the  back  glass  are  made  of  ordinary  clear  glass..  Ask  Deepak  for  more  info.

i  have  also  changed  my  three  tanks  because  of  that  greenish  tinch  in  the  glass

i  think  the  saint  gobbain  glass  has  the  black  tinch  seen  from  one  side  so  i  made  the  new  one  from  that.

By  the  time  passes  the  glass  also  got  some  different  it  hasnt  too  clear  at  the  time  of  new.

Check  out  this  link.  The  guy  has  used  starphire  glass  in  his  tank.  Only  the  front  and  sides  are  made  of  starphire  glass  and  the  backside  is  ordinary  glass.  You  can  clearly  makeout  the  difference

Does  any  one  know  about  the  tensile  strength  or  the  breaking  point  details.  Or  modulus  details  of  the  2  (normal  and  the  iron  one).

By  that  we  can  get  to  know  if  the  investments  are  worth.

By  this,  For  sure  our  glass  caluculations  on  thickness  ,  ratio  and  others  would  also  differ  isint  it.

The  glass  is  called  'Crystal'  glass.  It  is  used  only  in  the  front  and  viewing  sides  since  it  is  expensive.  Available  with  Balaji  glass  in  Bangalore.  Personally  I  feel  it  is  overkill  for  planted  tanks  since  if  you  have  a  flourishing  planted  tank  you  w'ont  even  notice  if  there  are  scratches  on  the  glass.

But  Atanu  is  the  difference  noticeable??...  and  what  is  the  thickness  of  the  glass  u  have  used.  If  the  difference  is  noticeable  for  a  thickness  of  8mm  or  10  mm,  i  would  like  to  give  it  a  try  and  use  it  for  my  next  tank.

Difference  is  only  noticeable  if  you  have  two  glass  side  by  side  for  comparison.  As  trevor  had  suggested..  if  your  point  of  focus  is  something  very  beautiful  behind,  the  glass  may  not  matter.  For  a  planted  tank  my  personal  feeling  is  its  not  worth  the  money..as  the  background  subject  is  majorly  green  in  color.  If  you  have  a  reef  or  a  chiclid  tank  with  rock  decorations  then  definitely  yes  this  is  worth  it.  My  5  ft/2ft/21  inch  ht   tank  is  made  of  12  mm  glass  thickness  along  with  top   length  wise  braces  and  bottom  all  four  side  braces..  The  middle  bulge  is  around  4  mm  difference  from  the  side.
