 Hi

Yes  it  Looks  like  a  rosy  barb  with  a  similar  black  spot  in  the  fish's  rear  side. However  the  color  of  the  fish  doesn't  match  it..  It  is  silvery  Grey  in  color  resembling  a  Silver  Dollar  in  color.

 Just  keeping  the  thread  alive...

Guess  it  is  a  Puntius  but  does  some  one  know  the  exact  name  of  this  fish?

 cheers

Hi.  New  to  the  board.  Glad  I  found  it  as  I  do  have  an  interest  in  fishes  from  India  (my  river  tank  contains  mostly  species  from  there.  See  http://franksaquarium.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=56.  I  need  to  uypdate  this  thread  with  new  pics,  but  you  get  the  idea.

The  fish  in  the  pic  does  indeed  look  like  a  female  rosy  barb.  Females  can  be  quite  silvery  in  color  although  most  of  the  time  there  may  be  just  a  hint  of  red  in  the  body  and/or  fins  (as  the  ones  I  collected  in  Florida  were).  I  have  also  gotten  wild  rosy's  from  India  where  the  females  were  fully  silver  with  no  coloration  at  all.  Has  the  fish  colored  up  at  all?

 Hey!!!
Certainly  not  a  Puntis...  I  suppose  sandeep  in  correct,  Should  be   a  Rosy  barb.

I  believe  the  rosy  barb  to  be  a  northern  India  fish  (according  to  Innes,  that  is).  However,  a  similar  species,  Puntius  chola,  is  found  in  southern  India.  See  Puntius  chola  for  a  pic.
The  one  problem  with  this  is  the  spot  on  the  caudal  peduncle  (where  the  tail  meets  the  body).  In  the  rosy  barb,  it  is  closer  to  the  body  proper  (as  in  your  photo)  while  in  P.  chola  it  is  directly  on  the  peduncle.
Is  there  an  orange  spot  on  the  gill  cover?

 O.K....
My  name  is  Frank  Greco,  and  I've  been  in  the  hobby  for  over  35  years  (YIKES!)  I  currently  work  in  a  public  aquarium  here  in  New  York  (USA)  as  well  as  running  my  own  side  business.
I've  been  interested  in,  and  keeping,  Indian  native  fishes  for  the  last  7  years  or  so,  starting  with  the  barbs.  Today  my  interests  lie  with  the  hillstream  fishes,  especially  the  Schistura/Noemacheilus  loaches  (as  well  as  Aborichthys).

 Hi

I  too  think  rosy  barbs  as  such  are  a  north  indian  species.  But  then  who  knows?

Is  retrogk  aka  Rahul  around?  Perhaps  he  could  shed  some  light  on  this.

 Deepesh

I  found  this  information  in  FishBase  under  Puntius  conchonius  Occurrence  in  India.

 ASSAM,  MANGALDAI  DARRANG  DIST
 Nugli  river,  Pulta
 Utterbhag
 Mungeli
 Kalimpong  Duars  &  Siliguri  Terai
DARJEELING  DISTRICT,  streams  in  Himalayan  foothillsbelow  Darjeeling
 Calcutta
 Orissa
 Assam
 Poonah
 Ganges  at  Allahabad
 Timlik,  Siwalik,  Indien
Indus  River  drainage:  Jhelum  River,  Gingal

I  will  admit  that  I  do  not  know  much  about  locations  in  India,  but  I  believe  these  are  northern.  It  appears,  using  info  from  FishBase,  that  it  is  replaced  in  southern  India  by  P.  chola.  The  two  are  found  together  in  Calcutta  and  Ganges  River  delta  at  Pulta.

 I  love  that  site.
I  agree.  The  spot  is  more  on  the  body  than  on  the  caudal  peduncle,  which  is  an  obvious  indicator  Puntius  conchonius.

Puntius  conchonious  is  an  extremley  variable  species  and  IMO  they  are  widely  distributed  across  India.  I  have  caught  some  in  the  Kodaikanal  lake  as  well.   Infact  the  P.Conchonius  i  saw  in  the  Ichamathi  tiver  were  much  more  stockier  and  silverish  than  the  rosy  barbs  we  usually  see  in  the  LFS.

BTW  -  Frank  -  i  saw  your  tank  pics,  great  job  and  welcome  to  IAH.
