I  was  just  wondering,  how  many  of  us  do  actually  do  budgeting  for  their  aquariums,  both  initial  &  and  running  costs.
Some  guidelines  would  be  good  for  newcomers

As  long  as  you  do  not  ever  borrow  cash  I  think  everything  will  be  okay.  They  cannot  be  any  budget  for  an  aquarist.  An  aquarist  is  a  sucker.  Budgets  are  for  shopkeepers.  Smile

Budget?  What  is  it?  Something  we  teach  undergraduate  economics  student-  not  to  be  practised!  My  official  budget  for  the  planted  tank  is  5K-  unofficially-  I  must  have  spent  20K  in  the  last  one  year  on  it.  Now  that  I  have  added  a  marine  setup,  I  have  stopped  thinking  about  it.  However,  the  marine  tank  helps  me  subsidize  my  planted  ones-  my  wife  can  `perfectly'  see  why  marine  setup  is  so  expensive  (she  likes  it  more  than  I  do)-  hence,  the  cross  subsidization.  A  10%  markup  on  prices  of  marines  means  a  whole  new  FW  tank  for  me.

The  other  trick  I  am  lately  using  to  `confuse'  her  bygradually  impressing  upon  the  fact  that  let's  cut  down  on  fish  consumption  and  instead  get  into  fish  preservatioin!  So  it  is  just  a  matter  of  budget  re  allocation  on  fishes!  ROFL

 Hi  guys

I  never  start  with  a  budget  in  the  first  place  (its  more  fun  to  work  without  one).  But  enjoy  credit  with  my  LFS  guys  .....  they  are  the  nicest  people  I  know!!!    Rock On

My  marine  tank  was  3x  times  the  budget  I  had  outlined  .....  not  to  mention  the  running  expenditure.

Im  in  the  process  of  setting  up  a  planted  tank  (discus  if  possible)  and  haven't  even  budgeted  yet.

Any  pointers  on  how  much  it  will  cost?  Ballpark  figures  will  help

 Budgets..........    ROFL      ROFL      ROFL

When  I  first  bought  my  tank,  I  have  heard  about  this  word  and  remember  using  it.....

But  now,  no  budgetting  at  all......  my  wife  hasn't  found  out  yet  that  I  am  spending  more  money  on  aquarium.....

The  scene  is  going  to  be  very  worse  when  my  dad  sees  all  my  aqua  stuffs........

Well,  a  very  good  topic  chosen  for  discussion  by  friend  Sandeep,  I  had  a  budget  of  10k  for  a  48"  x  18"  x  18"  fresh  water  tank  inclusive  of  all  gadgets, however,  after  calculating  the  cost  of  tank,  hood  [wooden]  canister  filter  2217  from  Eheim,  Substrates,  fertilzers,  lights  [to  include  one  4'  super  light  and  2  x  36  watts  CFL's  from  Azoo],  a  well  fabricated  wooden  stand  to  suit  the  decor  of  my  living  room,  aquatic  plants  and  fishes  [still  to  choose]  and  a  Co2  booster,  I  now  find  that  my  budjet  needs  to  be  further  stretched  by  more  than  50  %  to  what  I  planned  initially  keeping  in  mind  the  basics  for  a  start  up    to  cultivate  a  hobby  of  fish  keeping.to  this  I  have  not  yet  been  able  to  add  the  running  cost  for  maintaining  the  aquarium.
Surely,  if  the  experienced  ones  can  chalk  out  a  budget  for  different  size  of  tanks  that  includes  the    cost  of  all  the  basic  equipments  including  the  tank,  hood  and  lighting  fixtures  will  surely  help  many  a  newbie  like  me  and  most  of  us  will  be  saved  from  being  caught  by  our  wives  one  day  or  the  other    ROFL
