My  largest  juvenile  has  had  a  stomach  problem  for  a  day  or  so  now.
He  hes  a  little  bulge  in  the  stomach  and  is  now  sitting  in  a  corner  most  of  the  time.  He  used  to  be  very  active  and  the  alpha  of  the  group  before  this.

I  have  dosed  epsom  salt  in  the  tank  yesterday  and  plan  to  continue  the  dosage  for  today  and  tomorrow  as  well.

Is  this  enough  dosage?  I  dose  about  2  teaspoons  per  50  gall.

 Pradeep,

IMO  2  tsp/50  G  is  too  less.  It  would  be  better  if  you  isolate  the  sick  discuss  and  use  1  tsp/10  G  and  see  if  there  is  any  improvement.

Also  what  feed  do  you  use?

 Regards
 Bala

 Hi  Pradeep,
The  first  thing  u  do  is  remove  the  fish  to  hospital  tank,if  it  is  really  loat  then  there  are  chances  that  it  claims  life  of  multiple  fishes  one  after  the  other.Do  not  feed  it  until  completely  recovered.  bloat  is  a  deadly  disease  can  take  down  even  the  very  toughest  cichlids.  Even  one  of  my  favorite  fish,  a  green  terror  which  i  had  from  when  it  was  about  an  ich  to  6"(nearly  9  months  old),  died  due  to  bloat   Crying or Very sad  ,  it  happened  because  those  days  I  was  busy,  did  not  observe  the  bulge,  later  within  36  hrs  the  fish  died.  The  detailed  treatment  procedure  can  be  found  here:
 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/malawi_bloat.php

CONFIRM  with  the  experts  that  u  can  treat  your  discus  in  the  way  as  shown  in  the  link

Is  the  temperature  below  28???  I  would  keep  it  at  30  during  the  medication...  that  increases  the  metabolism!!  feed  very  sparingly!!!  also  keep  an  eye  on  the  color  of  the  poop!

 Pradeep,

Are  you  soaking  the  tetra  bits  in  water  before  feeding  it  to  the  Discus?  if  not  please  do  so.

 Regards
 Bala

2  teaspoons  is  not  gonna  help.   You  need  atleast  1-1.5  gm/gallon  with  50%  wc  twice  a  day  and  a  temp  in  the  lower  30s  for  3  days.

 Ok,
 So  now  isolate  sick  fish,
 Raise  temperature  to  ~30
 Add  more  epsom  salt.

My  qt  is  quarantining  a  pair  of  oscars  atm,  so  can  I  use  a  bucket  to  treat  the  discus.
I  know  there  is  a  visibility  issue  with  the  bucket  but  thats  the  best  I  can  do  for  now.

 hi
i  would  suggest  you  to  dose  in  the  tank  only  and  not  isolate  it..(never  seen  malawi  bloat  in  discus  here  in  mumbai)
IMO  if  u  isolate  discus  and  is  single  in  the  tank  it  will  have  very  less  or  no  food..
And  the  dosage  is  1TBSP  per  10  gals  as  a  minimum  and  can  also  dose  till  3  TBSPS  but  in  your  case  stick  to  1  TBSP..
and  do  check  the  color  of  the  poop  and  if  it  is  not  black  and  like  a  rock.
then  u  might  have  to  use  some  meds  too..

I  don't  really  think  its  bloat.  It  looks  like  constipation  to  me,  more  than  anything  else.  I  would  be  more  worried  if  the  epsom  salt  does  not  work.

 Hi  pradeep
 i  second  your  opinion..
if  it  is  constipation  then  the  bloat  should  subside  till  day  after  tomo..  and  if  not  then  may  be  u  should  deworm  them  ...

Hmm...  I  think  Mitul  is  right.  Pradeep,  you  should  try  to  deworm  them  or  treat  them  with  any  broad  spectrum  medicine.  They  may  be  having  some  internal  bacterial  infection.  Treat  them  with  BeFuran.

&  Please  dont  use  bucket,  get  a  small  tank  of  24x12x12  inches.

Would  suggest  you  to  check  the  poop  before  you  start  the  treatment.   If  the  poop  is  chewy  white,  Metro  treatment  might  help.  If  the  poop  is  segmented  white,  Praziquantel  might  help  to  cure  the  worms.

And,  do  not  use  bucket  for  treatment.  Go  for  smaller  tank,  if  possible.

The  swelling  has  subsided  considerably  since  yesterday.  The  guy  is  still  off  though,  hangs  around  in  a  corner  by  himself.  His  colour  is  normal  but  his  behaviour  is  not.
Temperature  is  up  in  the  low  30s.  I  am  running  out  of  epsom  salt.  I'll  probably  have  to  decrease  the  water  level  to  half  and  dose  now.

I  have  had  some  real  big  poopers  overnight;  mostly  red  but  yes,  there  is  chewy  white  poop  around.

Can  someone  help  me  out  with  the  meds  and  why  I  am  using  them?
 As  far  as  I  know,
 Metro  -  Deflagellate
 Prazi  -  Deworming
 Befuran  -  Broad  spectrum  antibiotic

I  have  metro.  Where  can  I  get  the  other  two  in  Bangalore?

I  guess  I  have  to  go  with  metro  now,  in  the  water  column.  Dosage  ?
