 Hi,

I  recently  bought  an  imported  FH  for  one  of  the  tank.  The  local  fish  shop  told  me  to  feed  it  with  small  gold  fish  once  in  a  while  so  as  it  would  enhance  its'  growth.  Can  some  one  suggest  if  this  is  true  and  moreover  if  live  fish  are  given  as  feeds  for  FH  will  it  affect  the  water  quality  or  should  I  have  to  change  water  too  often.

I  usually  feed  the  FH  with  Humpy  Heads  pellets  and  frozen  prawns.  Will  this  do?

 Thanks,

 Mathan.

 hi  there,
                   congrats  on  your  purchase,
live  feeder  fish  do  not  have  any  effect  on  the  growth  of  fish  whatsoever,  as  far  as  i  can  see  its  no  better  than  to  ultimately  make  your  flower  horn  sick  because  of  the  diseases  which  these  so  called  feeder  fish  are  carrying  with  them...
water  quality  does  play  an  important  role  in  the  growth....ensure  regular  water  changes  and  see  the  difference.......  about  30%daily  will  be  enough  as  far  as  i  can  see........
prawns  are  good  for  enhancing  the  color...  but  still  u  can  formulate  your  own  BHM  mix  incorporating  tetrabits(good  color  enhancers),  prawns,  vitamins,  and  some  veggie  stuff(in  case  his  stomach  gets  upset  sometimes)  to  keep  your  fish  healthy  and  attractive............
let  us  know  if  u  need  a  proper  recipie  for  the  same  there  are  many  who  can  help  u  on  the  subject...............

Thanks  for  the  quick  reply  buddy.  Yes,  I  would  love  to  make  my  own  BHM  mix.  Please  guide  me  or  give  me  the  links  that  is  previously  there  in  IAH.

 Thanks,

 Mathan,

Please  look  into  IAH  food  forum  for  BHM  mix.
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=24

You  will  get  lof  of  info  on  BHM,  but  I  will  suggest  you  to  feed  him  with  good  quality  pellets  (OCEAN  FREE,  AZOO  etc  etc  &  market  prawns.

Feeding  live  feeder  fish  is  not  a  good  idea.

Unless  you  derive  sarcastic  pleasure  in  watching  a  fish  devour  another,  or  shred  it  to  pieces  in  front  of  you,  we  advise  you  to  stick  to  alternate  foods  like  those  mentioned  above.

 Suraj,

Thanks  for  your  advice  I  shall  stick  to  alternate  feeding  method  rather  than  live  feed.  But  I've  watched  most  of  the  LFS  feed  with  live  fishes.  Why  do  they  do  so?

LFS  would  rather  not  feed  anything  if  they  had  their  way.

In  any  case  they  choose  the  cheapest  available  feeding  option,  without  any  care  for  the  fish.  Feeding  live  fish,  somehow  gets  the  onlooker  interested.

They  are  not  the  ones  who  are  going  to  keep  the  fish  for  a  few  years,  you  are.

They  don't  want  it  to  die  of  hunger  in  their  hands  in  the  few  hours/days  it  remains  with  them  that's  all.

If  it  does  die  in  your  hands  due  to  transmitted  disease  they  make  more  money  on  your  next  purchase.

 Hi  Mathan,

To  add  to  the  above  mentioned  comments  by  experts,  LFS  folks  will  tell  you  lot  other  things  to  feed  you  fish  from  live  to  what  not  just  to  keep  their  business  running.  This  poor  knowledge  is  also  their  advantage  in  having  you  come  back  for  the  same  stuff  again  and  again  till  your  fish  falls  ill.  And  then  the  vicious  cycle  start;  medication, alternate  food,  and  finally  you  loose  your  best  fish.

There  a  re  very  few  LFS,  who  would  give  you  the  right  information.  And  now  that  you  are  a  member  out  here  you  dont  have  to  go  to  any  LFS  for  any  kind  of  advice  as  we  have  our  own  experts  sharing  their  experience  and  knowledge  24/7.

 Welcome  to  IAH!

 Regards,
 Surya

Live  fish  isn't  really  that  bad.   If  you  can  get  disease  free  guppies  or  mollies,  then  it  could  be  a  real  good  food.   Infact  live  fishes  are  better  than  beef  heart,  as  they  almost  have  the  same  protien  levels  but  do  not  pollute  water  as  BHM.   BTW,  most  fishes,  especially  cichlids  can  do  equally  well  with  pellets.

 Madan,

I  agree  with  you.  Most  of  the  LFS  are  there  to  do  business  and  they  are  not  bothered  about  the  quality  of  the  fish  they  are  selling.  Infact  when  I  started  this  hobby  I  was  duped  with  fishes  that  was  dyed  to  make  it  look  attractive.  Some  LFS  do  not  have  ethics  at  all  but  not  all  of  them  are  like  that  and  there  are  few  who  gives  quality  but  it  would  be  trial  and  error  for  us  to  find  out  the  right  LFS.

 Appreciate  your  reply  on  this.

 Mathan.

 Surya,

Yes.  Since  I  became  a  member  here  I  have  learned  a  lot  about  aquarium  and  fish  keeping.  I  am  still  a  novice  in  this  but  this  forum  has  been  wonderful  and  helped  me  to  know  more  about  this  hobby  and  now  it  has  become  a  passion  for  me  and  my  only  regret  is  why  I  didn't  find  this  forum  earlier.

I  am  thankful  and  grateful  to  all  members  and  experts  here  for  the  support.

 Mathan

 Madhu,

The  real  difficult  thing  might  be  not  knowing  if  the  live  feed  has  disease  or  not.  We  have  to  go  by  what  the  LFS  guys  say.

Thats  where  the  concept  of  quarantine  kicks  in..  take  the  fish  ,  quarantine  them  for  a  good  3-4  weeks,  observe  them,  and  if  you  find  them  healthy,  only  then  feed.

Generally,  tank  raised  fish  are  obviously  better  than  'gutter  guppies'..

 Hi  Mathan,

I  bought  a  pair  of  guppies  for  20rs  (Common  ones)  to  have  them  breed  and  feed  the  fry's  to  my  angel.  Was  successful  to  breed  them(  Easy  task)  but  cant  think  of  feeding  the  little  ones  as  my  heart  doesnt  agree  to  do  so.

But  you  should  be  able  to  feed  the  fries  to  your  fish  as  they  are  home  bred.  Can  do  this  by  having  a  pair  of  guppies  in  a  tub  with  hiding  space  for  the  fries.  Can  have  floating  plants  for  them.  Once  you  have  the  fries  shift  them  to  another  tub  to  raise  them.  And  guppies  breed  like  there  is  no  tomorrow.  In  this  way  you  will  never  run  short  of  live  feed.

 Regards,
 Surya
