 Hi  Members,

My  friend  has  a  pair  of  "Red  Ear  Sliders".  I  had  gifted  her  on  her  birthday  2  yrs  ago.  Â One  of  them  has  grown  to  6+"  and  the  other  one  is  still  2.5".  Even  after  repeatedly  telling  her  about  keeping  them  in  a  bigger  space  these  poor  guys  have  been  kept  in  a  circular  turtle  bowl  which  is  about  8"  in  diameter.

Â   Â   Â   Â   Â   Â   She  kinda  leaves  the  guys  to  explore  the  house  everyday.  Now  the  problem  is,  the  small  guy  is  not  eating  anything  where  as  the  big  guy  eats  well.  The  small  guy  doesnt  not  show  any  interest  in  eating  and  is  very  lazy  to  move  around.

Â   Â   Â   Â   Â   Â   Â   Â Is  there  anything  I  can  do  now,  like  keeping  him  in  a  seperete  tub?  Your  valuable  suggestions  will  be  of  a  great  help  as  I  cant  see  anything  happening  to  this  guy.

And  I'm  sorry  if  this  post  was  not  to  be  here  in  the  first  place.

 Regards,
 Surya

 Hi  Surya
There  is  a  thread  on  Res  which  i  had  posted  earlier  do  check  that.

As  of  this  problem  i  have  a  feeling  that  the  turtle  is  sluggish  because  of  the  weather.
Turtles  are  reptiles  (  i  am  sure  you  knew  that,  But  starting  the  sentence  like  this  makes  it  look  good  Smile  )  so  they  need  at  least  a  couple  of  hours  of  sunlight  or  any  full  spectrum  light  to  kind  of  rejuvenate.

The  RES  by  nature  will  eat  under  water  because  it  is  easier  for  them  to  swallow.

Do  tell  us  What  your  friend  is  feeding  them.

RES  under  4  inches  are  known  to  be  non-vegetarian  and  as  they  grow  bigger
they  will  tend  to  eat  more  greens.

Hope  the  info  will  be  helpful.

 Hi  Lawrence,

 Thank  you  for  the  link.

Mayur:  Thank  you  for  the  valuable  information.  Yes  I  do  know  that  they  are  reptiles.  Well  coming  back  to  what  they  feed  them,  it’s  kind  of  embarrassing  to  say  this  but  her  dad  feeds  them  father  feeds  them  roti’s,  boiled  rice.  He  also  feeds  hi  red  pellets,  discuss  pellets,  flakes  and  dried  shrimps.

I  did  tell  them  that  roti  and  rice  would  not  be  good  for  them  but  they  kind  of  feel  proud  to  talk  about  their  turtles  eating  the  same.

I’m  going  to  pick  the  guy  today  evening.  And  this  is  what  I  plan  to  do.
â€¢ Put  him  in  a  1’  (radius)  circular  tub  which  is  10”  high
â€¢ Will  give  him  a  new  environment  with  rocks  and  driftwood  and  maintain  the  water  level  to  about  6”
â€¢ Drop  in  a  pair  of  feeder  guppies  to  entice  his  appetite/  Live  worms

Do  you  think  I  need  to  maintain  the  water  temperature  by  using  a  heater?  If  yes,  is  26  degree  ok  for  some  time.

 Regards,
 Surya

 Surya,

 Avoid  dried  shrimp,
Roti,  rice  is  new  to  me  too  so  i  will  not  be  able  to  comment.
they  can  feed  cucumber,  tomato  (  seeds  removed  )  slightly  blanched  palak

Keeping  him  in  the  tub  is  a  good  idea
See  if  you  can  fix  a  regular  40  watt  bulb  about  8-10  inches  above  the  tub  and  keep  the  light  ON  for  atleast  4hours.
Make  sure  there  is  about  3inchs  of  water  and  place  the  driftwood  in  such  a  way  that  he  is  able  to  perch.
avoid  too  many  rocks  as  i  have  seen  they  will  get  stuck  in  the  gaps  and  die.

Feeder  guppies, shrimp  worms  are  a  good  idea.

Turtles  are  very  clumsy  and  can  hurt  themselves  by  trying  to  bite  or  bump  into  a  heater  so  if  you  are  using  the  heater  pls  put  it  into  a  PVC  pipe  and  cover  the  sides  so  that  the  turtle  will  not  be  able  to  touch  the  glass  of  the  heater.23-24  deg  is  ok.

Actually  the  40  watt  bulb  should  do  the  trick,  my  suggestion  is  to  wait  on  the  heater  idea  for  a  while.

Note:   check  the  turtles  top  shell
1.If  it  has  any  kind  of  algae  clean  it  with  a  tooth  brush.
 2.  If  the  shell  is  soft  (not  the  regular  hardness)  then  it  could  be  calcium  deficient,  in  this  case  you  could  dust  a  few  small  insects  with  powdered  Calcium  Sandoz  (  what  we  ate  as  kids)  and  leave  it  on  the  drift  wood  accessible  to  the  turtle.
3.A  small  tiny  bit  of  garlic  will  help  digestion.
4.If  you  need  to  do  a  water  change,  try  and  do  it  on  a  sunny  day  at  noon,  do  not  use  cold  water,  A  heater  could  come  in  handy  here.

Try  this  and  keep  me  updated.

 Hi  Surya
The  setup  seems  fine,  you  could  increase  the  water  a  little  bit  .
The  swollen  eyes  could  be  a  weakness,
see  him  till  tomorrow  and  you  may  have  to  force  feed  him.
The  feeders  may  be  a  little  big  for  him  to  eat  but  leave  them  there,  let's  see  what  happens.

 Hi  Mayur,

The  Shell  seems  to  be  fine,  but  some  how  it  seems  as  if  he  has  got  a  week  shell.....  Not  sure  but  I  felt  this  way  while  tapping  the  shell  slowly.

 HI  All,

Latest  update  is  that  this  guy  is  not  eating  anything  .  Gave  him  a  small  piece  of  tomato  with  out  seed  and  its  still  untouched.

He  is  just  lying  on  the  drift  wood.  If  I  have  take  the  measure  of  force  feeding  him  ,  how  do  I  do  this?

 Regards,
 Surya

The  shell  should  be  hard  and  sturdy.  Does  it  feel  like  clay?  If  the  shell  is  soft  it  is  most  definitely  a  severe  lack  of  calcium  in  the  diet.
In  nature  it  is  got  by  sunlight.
You  should  use  a  full  spectrum  bulb  which  plays  an  essential  part  in  the  calcium  metabolization  process.

You  could  keep  it  out  doors  for  a  couple  of  hours  in  the  sun.  After  keeping  him  out  doors  then  offer  him  food.  This  is  best  time.

Since  your  turtle  is  also  having  eye  infections  as  well,  this  is  most  certainly  the  result  of  improper  environment  and  diet  deficiency.

 Hello  Surya,

I  have  never  kept  these  RES  but  found  a  link  that  might  help  you  with  the  eye  infection  and  also  the  other  common  diseases  in  the  RES.  Please  check  this  and  try  the  treatment
