I received some fish from Shankar last week, shipped from Chennai to TVM. Because it was a working day, I could not collect the fish until about 7 hours after they'd arrived (after spending about 18 hours in transit).
Thanks to the excellent job Shankar did, packing the fish, all of them were in great condition when I let them out of their bags. The shipment included fish that require lots of oxygen and a large-ish Mystus... no holes in bags, no leaks or anything.
Just goes to show the importance of packing fish properly

It is true that good packing make the fish arrive safe. My bitter experience here. I bought some red danios and guppiy males from chennai (giri road)
due to improper packing and less oxygen more fishes i lost some guppies and danios, for a meret 4hr travel (pondicherry).
The fellow who packed said u can to Pondy & come back to Chennai and then go Pondy, they will survive.

Good Packing does not mean just -fishes packed in double covers- well oxygenated - double bands - put in another carry bag-wrapped in newspaper and buffers allover and again into a c/b box with a strap to lift and what not.
Handling also plays a vital role for safe delivery.
Though packing was excellent I lost a lot of fish which I sourced because the box was kept on the airport tarmac for over 3 hours in the hot sun.
I have seen cartons being thrown ,tossed and kept near sources of heat.
Fishes have been lost due to boxes kept in locked cars for over 2 hours in summer.
In all the three cases the cases packing was excellent.
Badly packed fishes can also reach safely if handled with care.
However well packed the consignment is - you can also loose fishes
* if the fishes have been fed before packing
*using fresh water for packing and not the tank water
*re-using plastic covers
*handling fishes badly while netting
*packing fishes which are not in top shape
*too many fishes in a packet
*mixing of different varities in the same packet.
