 Dear  All,

I  have  two  nano  tanks  of  (12  W  X  12  D  X  15  H  inches)  and  I  have  kept  3  mollies  in  both  the  tanks  with  a  small  internal  power  filter.  I  keep  the  lights  on  from  8  AM  to  8PM  everyday.  The  only  difference  I  have  made  in  the  tank  is  in  the  type  of  lights  fitted.  I  have  used  a  9  Watt  Philips  PL  Lamp  in  both  of  them  but  in  one  tank  I  have  used  Warm  White  (Orange  Colored  Light)  and  in  the  other  I  have  used  Cool  Daylight  (White  Colored  Light).

After  about  a  month  I  have  noticed  that  the  tank  with  the  Warm  White  Light  has  brown  Algae  in  it  whereas  the  Cool  Daylight  tank  has  green  algae  in  it.

 Therefore  the  questions  are:

 (1)  Whether  having  Green  Algae  in  a  tank  is  better  then  Brown  Algae?
 (2)  Does  the  Cool  Daylight  helps  in  the  growth  of  Green  Algae?

Expert  comments  &  suggestions  will  be  highly  appreciated.

 Thank  you.  Smile

 Deba  from  Kolkata.

I  thought  the  brown  algae  was  due  to  excess  silicates  !!!

 Deba

probable  causes  of  brown  algae  could  be

 Low  Light  Conditions
Light  more  in  red  spectrum(Particulary  when  flurocent  bulbs  are  at  the  end  of  their  life)
 Low  CO2  condition

I  doubt  if  brown  algae  has  any  relation  with  Silica  (although  many  websites  write  on  this)  !!

 Green  algae  will  thrive  when

Lights  are  more  in  blue  spectrum.  Higher  K  rating  will  contribure  more.
 Abundant  Nitrogen/Nitrate.
 Cleaner  water.

 These  are  my  experience.

 Regards
 Rana

 Dear  Deba
Laboratory  investigation  have  shown  that  the  growth  rate  of  algae  populations  depend  on  the  wavelengths  and  light  saturations. At  the  macro  level   you  have  onserved  that  algae  infestation  maximum  in  white  light  and  much  lesser  in  flurocent. Its  a  beautiful  subject.A  metadata  of  Springler  V.from  our  Sceince  database  specially  for  you.

 Keep  up  the  Scietific  temperament.
