 Hi  Udhay,

It  seems  you  have  kicked  off  very  well  with  your  discus.
In  terms  of  number,  you  can  add  4  to  6  more  discus  to  your  current  collection.
You  are  going  right  way  with  daily  WC,  filteration  and  temperature.  Fantastic.  Smile

Everyone  has  its  own  recipe  for  BHM,  you  can  search  the  internet  for  various  recipes.
Check  this  recipe  posted  by  myself  for  your  reference.
BHM  Recipe  for  Discus  Newbies  (With  Pics)

Howver,  would  suggest  you  to  vary  your  discus  diet  with  BHM  and  other  dry  stuff  like  Tetra  Bits,  frozen  BW  etc.
Hikari  Discus  Bio  Gold  pellets  is  also  an  excellent  dry  food  option.

All  the  best  &  post  pictures  of  your  discus  if  you  can.

 Hi  Yogesh
Thankyou  for  your  advise  and  i  will  prepare  the  BHM  tomorrow,  then  i  proposed  to  buy  4  discus,  but  my  tank  capacity  is  120gallons  bare  bottom  tank,  there  is  one  driftwood  and  plants  such  as  anubias  and  javafrens  are  tied  on  driftwood  ,is  it  correct  to  buy  6NOs  of  discus  additionaly?

Iam  using  tap  water  to  my  discus  tank,  that  iam  storing  tap  water  daily  in  a  open  cement  tank  kept  in  ground  floor  and  then  next  day  pumping  it  to  another  cement  tank  which  is  on  2  floor  by  this  process  i  think  the  clorine  is  getting  resistent,  then  only  iam  using  this  water  after  testing  the  PH.but  the  ph  is  always  on  7  is  it  good  for  discus  tank?

i  will  post  my  discus  pictures  soon,  right  now  they  are  just  14  days  old  to  my  home,  if  i  go  near  to  the  tank  the  snakeskins  and  blue  diamonds  are  comming  very  near  to  the  front  glass  of  the  tank  on  seeing  me  but  others  are  not  comming  and  hidden  behind  the  driftwood.

 Thanks
 Udhay

 Dear  Udhay,

It  is  not  always  necessary  to  stick  with  traditional  rule  of  10G  per  discus.  There's  always  a  space  few  extra  when  you  are  prompt  with  WC.  IMO,  your  120G  will  easily  hold  14  adult  discus.  So  you  can  go  ahead  adding  extra  6  to  your  existing  lot  of  8.

Captive  discus  can  easily  play  around  in  pH  between  6  and  8.  Only  for  breeding,  they  would  prefer  soft  water  parameters.  Using  24  hr  aged  water  is  safe  option  anytime.

IMO  when  you  give  discus  hiding  option,  they  tend  to  be  bit  skittish.  I  would  be  removing  driftwood  +  plants  and  then  observe  the  behaviour  of  these  shy  discus  who  prefer  to  stay  back.

 Hope  this  helps.  Smile

 Hi  yogesh,
in  my  previous  post  i  said  my  discus  are  4"  and  3.5"  now  iam  having  doubt,   are  they  attained  maturity?
Because  yesterday  my  snakeskin  3.5"  laid  eggs  on  driftwood  and  another  one  4"i  think  it  may  be  more  than  4"is  guarding  the  eggs
yesterday  asusaly  i  changed  water  more  than60%,  evening  at  5.30  i  found  both  the  snakeskins  were  rubbing  on  driftwood  with  their  abdomen  side  on  the  movement  i  given  a  call  to  my  friend  "Suraj  kumaar"for  his  advise  i  bought  this  discus  from  him  he  is  also  IAH  member  and  coimbatore  aquarium  club  member.  as  per  his  advise  i  found  4  lines  of  eggs  on  the  drift  wood. The  colour  of  the  eggs  are  light  brown  in  colour.
now  i  want  to  know  which  one  is  male  and  female  because  i  dint  found  which  one  laid  eggs  but  i  saw  both  the  discus  were  rubbing  on  the  driftwood.
One  of  the  discus  that  is  3.5"  its  papilla  is  visible  and  the  other  one  4"  i  dint  found  its  papilla  but  always  on  guarding  the  eggs  and  simply  nibbing  the  eggs  with  its  mouth.

Next,  the  colour  of  the  eggs  not  yet  changed  after  12  hours,  so  are  they  fertiled?
 Give  me  your  advise

 Thank  you
 Udhay

 Udhay,

Wouldn't  risk  to  seperate  the  pair  (assuming  its  confirmed  pair)  to  new  tank  as  of  now.  Just  observe  the  behaviour  of  your  pair  for  the  next  couple  of  days.  Don't  be  discouraged  if  the  pair  eat  the  eggs  as  this  is  common  with  unmatured  couple.  Sometimes  a  pair  of  two  females  is  also  found  to  be  playing  around  with  the  eggs  &  eat  them  later.

If  this  lot  of  eggs  is  eaten,  seperate  them  to  their  own  breeding  tank  (18x18x18  cube  is  good)  with  PVC  pipe  or  breeding  cone/tile  to  lay  their  eggs  on.  Female  will  keep  laying  eggs  &  male  should  fertilise  them  with  his  sperm.  Add  methelyn  blue  (to  prevent  fungus  on  eggs)  once  male  is  done  with  his  job.  If  the  male  is  fertile,  eggs  should  hatch  2.5-3  days  after  being  laid  down  and  you  will  get  free  swimmers.

Keep  the  water  conditions  much  clean  as  you  can  during  the  whole  breeding  process.
Keep  us  posted  on  the  development,  thanks.

 Hi  Yogesh,
Today  afternoon  as  usual  I  changed  70%  of  water  and  the  PH  is  7-  7.5,
At  the  time  the  eggs  are  in  same  orrangish  colour  but  only  5of  them  turned  into  white
now  the  eggs  are  24  hours  old  they  remains  the  same  orange  colour  but  except  the  5eggs  the  male  is  guarding  the  eggs  and  the  female  is  also  guarding  just  near  to  the  nest,
I  dint  add  methyl  blue  in  the  tank.
The  pairs  are  very  aggressive  on  other  discus  and  some  times  the  male  is  also  very  aggressive  on  his  female.

 Thankyou
 Udhay

Hi  Friends,

Very  first  it  is  not  advisible  to  breed  smaller  size  discus  .  Unable  to  understand  how  your   3.5  inch  discus  breed  .If  at  all  they  breed  they  may  have  serious  problem  when  the  babies  start  pricking  the  slim  of  their  parents  .  Smaller  pair  means   ,  smaller  body  area  for  the  fries  for  their  feed  .  Parents  cannot  sustain  the  pricking  .  So  my  advice  to  go  for  bigger   size  pair  for  breeding  of  not  less  then  5  inch  .

In  a  community  tank  even  if  any  discus  lays  eggs  ,  other  discus  will  have  their  party  and  next  day  all  the  eggs  will  disappear  .

Once  you  identify  any  confirmed  Discus  Pair  in  the  community  Tank  ,  you  need  to  seperate  them  in  their  own  breeding  Tank  to  get  the  success  .

With  these  two  discus  ,  you  keep  a  watch  and  update  us  .

 Thanks
