 Dear  friends,

I  got  my  new  50”x18”x24  sized  tank  yesterday  (in  12mm  glass).  Below  I’m  posting  the  photo  of  the  tank.  Today  morning  I  filled  it  full  for  checking.  After  some  2  hours,  suddenly  water  started  flowing  out  as  a  waterfall.  I  somehow  managed  to  avoid  flooding  my  house.  I  have  emptied  the  tank  and  then  call  the  guys  who  made  the  tank  for  me.  They  told  that  they  will  fix  it  today  itself.

My  doubt  is,  is  this  a  really  serious  issue?  Is  it  possible  to  fix  once  the  tank  is  made?  Shall  I  tell  them  to  get  the  tank  replaced?

 Please  give  your  suggestions..

 Thanks

 Harikamal

He  probably  made  it  and  didn't  cure  it  well  enough,  before  giving  it  to  you.

It  can  be  fixed  easily  enough.  Just  let  the  silicon  sit  dry  for  a  day  before  filling  it  up  again  and  try  again.  Test  it  in  a  bathroom  or  verandah  if  you  can.

 Hi  Harikamal

As  Pradeep  mentioned  looks  like  he  did  not  cure  it  well.

Applying  another  layer  of  Silicon  will  solve  the  problem.  However  make  sure  of  the  below  points.

 1)  The  tank  should  be  completely  dry  before  the  next  coat  is  applied.  Keep  the  tank  in  the  sun  for  some  time  to  ensure  this.

 2)  Silicon  takes  24-48  Hrs  to  cure.  So  once  the  second  coat  is  applied  leave  the  tank  for  48  Hrs  to  cure  before  filling  in  the  water.

 3)  Just  to  be  on  the  safer  side  ask  the  guy  who  made  the  tank  to  apply  another  coat  on  all  the  edges  and  not  just  the  side  where  the  leak  is.

If  I  were  you  i  might  ask  the  lfs  guy  to  take  the  tank  apart  and  put  it  together  again.  If  the  leak  occured  because  your  tank  wasnt  cured  properly  then  its  probable  that  filling  it  with  water  has  affected  all  the  joints,  which  could  cause  a  problem  for  you  later.

I  had  a  tank  leak  once  and  the  leak  was  such  that  putting  another  layer  of  silicone  over  it  did  not  help.  What  had  happened  was  that  a  small  portion  of  the  seal  had  come  off  the  glass  (not  noticeably)  and  was  causing  the  leak.

Thank  you  all  for  your  replys,

I  don't  think  that  the  leak  came  due  to  the  improper  curing.  i  filled  the  tank  with  water  only  after  72  hours.  I  guess  the  problem  is  due  to  improper  sticking  of  the  backside  glass.

The  tank  vendor  came  and  applied  sealant  once  again  on  my  tank  the  day  before  yesterday  itself.  then  yesterday  evening  he  came  and  filled  it  full.  but  after  some  three  hours,  water  started  to  come  out  form  the  bottom  side  of  the  backside  glass.  Before  that  itself  i  have  noticed  that  the  backside  glass  is  having  a  bent  whan  the  tank  is  fully  filled.

Today  i  called  him  again  and  he  said  that  he  will  take  the  glasses  apart,  clean  them  and  stick  it  once  again.

I  hope  that  will  fix  the  problem.

 please  give  your  comments.

 Regards
 -Hari

Sad  12mm  glass  showing  a  bent  is  an  issue
Either  the  glass  is  not  12mm  or  the  glass  quality  used  is  inferior.

Its  would  always  be  better  if  you  personally  buy  glass  and  get  it  stuck  by  the  LFS.
If  you  can  replace  it,please  do  so  with  brand  new  quality  glass.  Smile

 Reg,

May  be  he  is  using  inferior  silicon.  Iam  more  worried  about  the  bending  issue.  If  possible  get  your  money  back  and  try  some  other  vendor.

 Thanks  to  all

The  tank  vendor  is  not  an  LFS.  They  are  a  professional  glass  art  shop.  They  are  making  a  lot  of  tanks  daily  even  cylindrical  ones.

my  tank  is  made  of  modi  gaurd  12  mm  glass  and  the  silicone  sealant  used  is  dr  .fixit.

one  more  thing  is  only  the  back  side  glass  was  slightly  bent  and  i  guess  it  is  because  it  is  not  neatly  attached  to  the  bottom  glass.  later  water  came  out  through  the  bent  portion.  and  when  i  reduced  the  water  level,  the  the  glass  bacame  straight  and  amount  of  water  coming  out  got  reduced.

 suggestions  please

 Regards  -  Hari

Never  knew  that  DR.  FIXIT  made  silicon  sealant  for  aquariums.  Surprised   An  glass  art  shop  to  make  your  aquarium.  Shocked  Guess  your  tank  will  do  fine  as  long  as  you  do  not  add  water.  Thumb Up

The  bottom  bowing  out  under  water  pressure  indicates  improper  pasting  of  the  glass.  When  you  reduced  the  water  level,  the  pressure  on  the  bottom  glass  was  reduced  and  hence  it  straightened  out.

Strip  off  all  the  silicone,  ensure  that  the  surfaces  are  totally  clean  again  (no  silicone  left  behind)  and  begin  sealing  it  again.

12mm  glass  should  be  able  to  withstand  that  amount  of  water  without  untoward  bowing.  For  your  tank,  I  would  suggest  adding  a  couple  of  strengthners  (glass  beading)  at  the  bottom.  You  should  have  used  15mm  glass  in  the  first  place.

Hari  when  i  purchased  a  36  inches  tank,  I  also  experienced  the  similar  problem.  Though  the  lfs  guy  came  and  did  the  patchup  it  seved  no  purpose  so  instead  of  wasting  time,  energy,  (anxiety)  etc   running  after  the  guy,  I  bought  myself  a  caulking  gun(  silicone  applicator)  and  a  silicone  tube  suitable  for  aquarium  use  and  did  a  neat  job  myself.  The  tank  should  be  bone  dry  before  you  proceed  with  any  repairs.

If  the  tank  has  been   repaired  fine,  if  not  I  can  lend  you  the  silcone  applicator  which  I  have  with  me  and  show  you  how  to  use  it.Let  me  know.JP  nagar  is  not  far  from  my  place.

 Thanks  Diwan,

Actually  my  tank  vendors  came  on  friday  and  did  the  pasting  once  again  with  the  silicon  i  suggested  and  i  filled  the  tank  with  water  yesterday  night.  till  now  there  is  no  problem.  Â Smile

The  only  issue  is  the  tank  vendors  are  again  asking  for  money  again  Â telling  that  it  is  due  to  some  problem  from  my  side.  I  have  shown  them  the  warning  on  the  Dr.Fixit  sealant  gun  that  it  is  not  for  aquarium  use  telling  that  they  have  been  using  it  earlier  also.  They  are  very  greedy  and  trying  to  exploit  the  fact  that  I'm  new  to  the  city.  Â Crying or Very sad
