Hi  I  have  a  FO  tank  for  about  6  months  now  (  60G  ).  I  have  been  able  to  source  some  LR  about  40lbs  and  wanted  to  add  it  to  my  established  tank.

What  is  the  best  method  for  the  same.  Can  i  add  small  quantitites  of  the  same  to  my  existing  tank  or  i  have  to  cure  it  in  a  seperate  container.  Its  difficult  to  get  a  seperate  container  since  I  have  certain  space  constraints.

 Please  Help  and  advice.

 Thanks
 Nash

hi  Nash  good  to  see  that  your  into  marine  aquariums  too.
Live  rock  can  be  added  to  your  existing  tank  but  please  please  please  cure  it  or  else  your  gonna  have  a  huge  spike  in  ammonia  and  nitrates.   Thumb Down
Cure  it  in  a  bucket  or  a  empty  tank  if  u  have  one  and  after  a  week  add  around  5lb  every  5-7  days
Remember  in  a  marine  tank  slow  and  steady  wins  the  race   Thumbs Up
 best  of  luck

I  second  Justshan21.  Cure  first  and  then  add  a  few  rocks  at  a  time...  All  the  best.

Thanks  Guys  ...  Wuts  the  size  of  the  bucket  that  i  should  use  for  40lbs  of  LR.

Would  a  15Gal  Thrash  Can  suffice  or  do  i  need  a  bigger  size.

I  have   some  realy  space  constraints  and  a  wife  !!

 Hi  guys,
Â   Â   Â   Â I  totally  agree  with  you  that  its  best  if  the  LR  is  cured  outside  the  main  tank  and  then  introduced.  But  dont  you  think  adding  all  at  one  go  would  be  the  better  option  ?  because  everytime  you  add  the  LR  the  tank  will  be  unstable  for  sometime,  because  no  matter  how  well  you  cure  the  LR  there  is  always  bound  to  be  some  dieoff...  which  might  affect  the  nitrogen  cycle.

 Regards,
 Jithin

@  Jithin  i  think  in  your  statement  itself  you  contradict  yourself  as  you  said
Quote:
no  matter  how  well  you  cure  the  LR  there  is  always  bound  to  be  some  die  off

this  is  why  you  add  a  little  at  a  time  so  as  to  not  upset  the  balance  of  the  tank
most  marine  fish  can  cope  with  small  changes  in   water  chem  but  if  you  introduce  a  large  amount  of  live  rock  at  one  time  it  will  cause  a  huge  fluctuation   of  water  chem  and  that  will  be  harmful  to  those  COSTLY  livestock

@  Nash  just  make  sure  that  the  water  is  circulating  all  over  the  live  rock  and  also  give  it  a  5min  fresh  water  bath  before  adding  it  to  cure

Well  this  brings  us  to  an  intresting  question  Smile
 which  is  more  harmful  ?

 1)  A  one  time  Big  change  in  the  water  parameters  or
 2)  A  small  Change  in  parameters  over  prolonged  a  period  of  time.

but  again  it  also  depends  on  the  type  of  fishes  in  the  tank.  Hardy  fishes  like  damsels  and  clowns  wont  mind  it  too  much  i  guess...
