Hello all, my name is Roopesh & I am from trivandrum, Kerala. I started a community aquarium about 15 days ago, had followed the instructions from here and elsewhere regarding setting. My setup is like this.. 3.5 X 1.5 X 1.75 feet tank on wooden frame & wooden hood. Tank ornaments and gravel / stones I got from chennai lilly pond complex during a recent visit. Filteration consists of UG Filter connected to two china make powerheads on either side of the tank. Aeration provided by one Boyu 9900 to 2 airstones. The tank was run for a week's time after which I added 8 red danios. They seemed very happy and were fed 2 times a day with granules. Later I added 5 orange sword tails, 1 pleco and 6 Guppies. Things were fine till yesterday, when I noticed the absence of one of the guppies (does pleco eat fish ?). I am yet to recover its body. Today morning one of danios was found sluggish staying on the surface without much movement and not taking food. Water is very clear, and I make sure that excess food is not added. 20 % water change was done after 8 days of setting, next is due.
What could be the problem with fishes ? Is it some disease or "new tank Syndrome " ? Please help.. |

Hi Roopesh , and welcome to IAH!!
Its probably NTS, because a tank could take anywhere upto 4 weeks to cycle. Add some salt if you can , it'll keep the nitrites from poisoning your fish. |

Welcome to IAH Roopesh
IMO,
It is most probably New tank syndrome.
All was ok till you added the danios at one go and the next batch of fish was probably added too early.
If I was you, I would have added the fish slowly over one months time.
I would also have changed water twice a week in the first 2-3 weeks and gradully shifted to once per week regime.
On second thoughs,
Did you observe the problem immediately after the water change? Are you sure the water that you have is chlorine free ?
For now,
Please do 50% water change every two days in the main tank for next few days and reduce the frequency slowly.
Seperate the ailling danio with little water from the main tank and rest of fresh chlorine free water and observe him for a day or two.
Good luck:) |

Hey Roopesh
Pleco's dont eat live fish.....dead fish is another story, usually all fish end up picking on it.
Did you quarantine the fish which you picked up before adding them to the main tank?
Would suggest to quarantine the sick Danio if possible. |

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier, was at work and thanks all of you for the suggestions.
As you all suggested, it may be new tank syndrome, because when I came home at 10.30 pm, 3 more danios were dead. I immediately changed about 50 % water and am waiting with my fingers crossed.
rohansd - water change was with well water, so no question of chlorine. Yes what you said is right, I shouldnt have rushed in to add more fish in the first place. & am planning to do more frequent water changes in the coming weeks.
psimhan - what is the action of salt ? Is it common salt you are talking of ? If so how much should I add for about 250 lts of water ?
Seetharam - No I did not quarantine the fish, simply because I do not have a facility to do so, more so because my house has 2 small kids, wanting to put their hands into every thing they can
Hope to pull out through the crisis.... |

you might get some gas with Well waters. Store them in a well aerated bucket overnight before use them in your aquariums. I once lost too many fish when I used well water, while I was in Trivandrum.
When you get surplus fresh water in TVM why do you have to even think about well water? |

Thillu - Never thought of the possibility of Well water having gas in it.
Using Well water on advice of LFS man, he adviced tap water will be chlorinated (I personally know this as I have gone to Aruvikkara, from where the city of Trivandrum gets fresh water, and have seen the chlorination plant there), so used the Well water. But as you said should I keep the well water for a day to settle things ?
Will update about the situation today as soon as I get home... |

Have you tested your well water for contamination?
Cheers

| I would advice you to use the fresh water instead of Well Water. Just store the fresh water in a wide opened bucket and aerate for over-night before your water change regime. |

Update : Found two more danios dead today morning.
Situation seems a little serious, especially since i had done a 50% water change yesterday.
Please suggest what is to be done. |

|
|
well, at last diagnosed the problem - its White spots disease. it was only when i observed the fish closely with the hood off did i notice
fine white markings on the danios. by that time it was already late with about 9 casualties. i went to the LFS, where i was given
a medicine - Aqua Dr byname. i was asked to add about 10ml to my 250 ltr tank, along with some salt. this i did and am waiting for the result.
what is the correct regime of using this medicine ? should i add salt again ?
please clarify .... |

Take whatever advise you receive from an LFS with a pinch of salt (no pun intended)
The next time he will diagnose another disease and sell you another bottle of coloured water.
Read up here

Read up on Ick here

White spots will not kill fish so quickly.
I've had white spot disease go away by itself with no action on my part.
Don't add any more fish to your tank as of now.
Don't dose your tank with random meds.
Do your partial w/cs regularly.
Expect some casualties for the next few weeks. |

Well things seem to be settling down, after about 11 casualities. I am not going to introduce any more fish for some time now.
I am seriously thinking of doing away with my UGF and going in for external cannister filters as I have got a fluval 203 now. I have put up for an advice in the filteraltion section. Please go thorough it and comment....
Thanks for the support |
