Hi All,
Tried my hand at growing Hemianthus callitrichoides ''Cuba'' emerged :-
It has been grown on a sponge outdoor in a plastic rectangle with the roots under water only and everything else emerged, No nutrients, just Sunlight ( Indirect ) and normal tap water changed ever two days plus lot of Rain .....
I am now planing to have the entire area covered with potted soil and find river bed gravel and see if it continues to grow ...

The tall plant shown in picture 5, is that a weed or is it good for aquariums? i have so much of it growing in some of my pots on the stairs that get a lot of water during the rains and i am tired with removing them out as weeds..... the pots contain laterite by the way.... |

Hi,
Its not a weed but a stem extension of hc.
i wish this hc covers whole of the tray quickly and then i can manage to grab atleast a good part of it.

Sujoy,
A quick question here. What happens if you take out one of those plants and plant it back into water? Will it shed all its leaves and survive thereafter?

Hi Sujoy,
Healthy growth . Have you moved them to submerged conditions & seen the results or are you yet to try it?
Tarun,
That's undoubtedly a weed; they grow well in areas with moisture.
Please take a closer look at the leaf & growth pattern.
HC – Oval leaves & small internode distance
Weed – Obovate leaves, large internode distance
Alongside, you’ll see distinguished leaf color & stem too.

| Sujoy da.... how about providing a fertile bed (Little bit of AS) for them instead of laterite and sand?? Otherwise they will survive but the growth rate will be very very less. |

I don't think there is any update. He is too busy with family front and trying to setup a 3 feeter for last 3 months (Till date he was able to move AS into the Glass box only after leak checking.) |

Sorry I have not been able post the updates and the pics, though they are in my camera.
I shall do it tomorrow for sure.
Some Inputs :-
1. The entire tray has been covered by HC.
2. They are grown totally emerged and are out in the open in the Cold Delhi Temprature ( Current Temp Range 18 C _Max- 7C_Min)
3. The Lower bottom Substrate is shilgthy moist by raising the water level to the bottom part of the tray.
4. The leaves are totally dry.
5. No problem even if you do not water the HC for over 10-15 days, now as the temp is low I just water them once in 15 days. (This is what I am doing now and may not directly relate to your setup, but what I ment was you do not need to have the leaves moist always)
6. The plants have adpted well to this temprature and the conditions.
7. Come Feb 09 and and I shall have an other tray ready to go.
8. HC can be grown emerged very easily. Rather than keeping the Leaves wet try and keep the bottom level of the substrate wet.
9. They do not require a very high light rather some shade is useful when it is outdoor. I guess as the leaves are out of water that are able to get the CO2 easily and require less light intensity for photosynthesis...they will adjust to the light level automatically.
10. Do not try and disturb the substrate or do anything new... allow the plant to adjust to the current conditions.
Best of luck.
Regards
Sujoy |
