Looks like an mbuna crossed with a Labidochromis.
The fish in the picture is a male. Females will not have this many egg spots on the anal fin. |

are they hybrids? moreover how to differentiate between Maylandia zebra "Makonde" and Pseudotropheus demasoni? I live in chennai and which is the fish with the higher probability of being available in fish stores here in Kolathur....? seems to be a lot of confusion in naming and sexual dimorphism of the cichlids available here...
thanks mr.rahul for your answers.... |

P. demasoni has stripes all the way down to the tail, in Maylandia the stripes start fading out midway down the dorsal fin. There are other differences, such as body shape and colour, but you have to compare the fish in person to make those out.
The fish in the OP is at least 50% M. zebra, which is the fish you are most likely to find here. Forget regional variants, what you get here is an aquarium strain |

Both are pretty different esp with regards to the color of dorsal fin. I have no idea about 'Makonde' though.
Most of the mbunas you see in Kolathur are hybrids. Shankar used to have demasoni. |

then there is no obsolete way of identifying the strains found here....hmmm... as far as hybrids goes what is the probability that most of the brood will be male or females? because i am running in and out or shops in kolathur with no definitive confirmation about the sexual dimorphism in these hybrids..even the jewel cichlid seems to be very difficult to sex...! i wish to have a breeding pair of any of these varieties ...
thanks mr.beta and mr.rahul for your informative response...! |

You cannot keep Mbunas in pairs. They need to be kept in groups preferably with fewer males and more females.
Shankar doesn't have the demasoni. |

The picture from Ajith Roberts is not a hybrid, its a slightly different color morph of Metriaclima/pseudutropheus Estherae. They also come in blue, bright orange, red and blotched forms.

That is juvenile pseudotropheus lombardoi, most common mbuna available(blue morph, local name). |
