Hello  Everyone,

I  Finally  got  my  dream  Tank  and  The  fishes  i  always  wanted  to  have.there  was  a  big  fight  in  my  house  about  the  big  tank,  but  somehow  managed  to  get  it  in  by  offering  a  bribe.hehe...
just  need  some  ideas  on  how  to  take  care  of  the  fish  and  how  to  setup  the  tank.

 I  bought  a  72"  x  18  "  x  24  "  (6  Feet  Tank).  Have  kept  the  tanks  in  my  living  room.

I  have  put  one  dozen  baby  piranhas,  thanks  to  a  lot  to  ADIP.

The  setup  includes  nice  flat  rocks  that  i  got  from  my  trip  to  sringeri  and  surrounding  areas  the  previous  week.  Thanks  to  oscar-lover  who  came  to  my  house  and  setup  the  tank.

i  have  also  put  in  some  drift  woods  that  i  got  from  a  local  LFS.

ADIP  advised  me  to  put  in  some  gravel,  gonna  get  it  from  ASK  tomorrow.

am  currently  feeding  them  beef  heart,  thanks  again  to  oscar-lover.

i  wanna  make  sure  the  RBP's  are  really  happy.

do's  and  don'ts  are  most  welcome.

 Thanks

will  put  a  picture  of  my  tank  in  the  coming  days.

Filtration,  i  think  iw  ould  be  usuing  two  boyu  1300  ltr  /  hr  filters  and  will  post  the  pictures  of  the  6  footer  within  a  week....the  piranhas  are  really  shy  and  take  shelter  when  someone  comes  near  the  tank...  but  i  assure  they  are  defnitely  not  sure  when  am  feeding  them...  they  start  biting  the  airstone,  the  tube  and  the  controller  when  i  feed  them...  they  move  around  like  a  pack  of  hungry  wolves...

I  would  need  some  advice  on  the  Filtration  part,  and  am  using  some  purple  colored  gravel  that  i  got  from  a  local  LFS,  should  i  use  sand?  should  i  also  put  some  plants  as  well???

 Here  are  few  facts  about  Piranhas  that  i  picked  up  on  net;

1  Not  very  active  swimmers  except  while  feeding
2  LIkes  softer  water  (driftwoods,  almond  leaves  can  be  added  to  the  tank)
3  Feed  them  BH  for  growth  and  shrimps/prawns  (both  shrimps/prawns  are  rich  in  carotene)
 4  Can  add  large  tetras
5  Prefers  low  light  tank  rather  than  brightly  lit  ones
6  Can  add  plants  like  Amazon  Sword
7  Sand  substrate  appreciated,  can  add  about  2  inch  layer  of  fine  sand
8  For  6ft  you  would  need  two  filter  of  1300  ltrs

Last  but  not  the  least,  dont  pet  them  like  your  oscars,  they  can  give  a  nasty  bite  is  they  are  not  in  a  very  good  mood  and  DO  NOT  release  them  in  any  water  bodies.

 Enjoy  Piranha  Keeping   Thumb Up

Are  you  saying  that  there  is  no  filtration  on  the  tank?  Plants  and  rocks  would  give  the  fish  some  places  to  hide  and  make  them  more  comfortable  in  the  tank  quickly.

 Hi  Navneet,
Good  to  know  of  your  graduation!
I  just  like  to  mention  a  recent  happening  with  my  client's  piranha  tank  -  thought  I'd  share  it  with  you,
A  client  of  mine  has  been  keeping  four  piranhas  in  his  tank  for  about  three  years  now  and  they  are  full  sized  healthy  fish  during  the  vacation  he  was  out  of  country  and  had  assigned  the  feeding  to  his  servant  who  for  some  reason  opened  the  tank  top  and  was  holding  the  top  with  one  hand  and  just  talking  to  someone  without  the  slightest  notion  of  what  the  fish  might  think  of  his  action.  The  fish  on  the  other  hand  mistook  his  thumb  for  a  morsel  and  jumped  out  of  the  water  to  give  him  a  nasty  wound!  He  had  a  good  piece  of  meat  taken  off  the  thumb  and  had  to  be  rushed  to  a  doctor  who  on  examination  revealed  that  the  main  nerve  that  controls  the  thumb's  movement  had  been  cut  off  with  neat  piece  of  thumb  muscles  and  the  thumb  would  not  function  properly.
This  are  the  hazards  of  not  understanding  animal  nature  and  taking  things  for  granted!
However,  from  my  experience  of  piranhas  -  they  are  wonderful  fish  and  very  sensitive  to  low  DO  (dissolved  oxygen).  They  are  also  highly  shy  and  will  not  readily  attack  the  owner  unless  provoked  delebrately  like  the  above  mentioned  acts!
 Happy  fishkeeping!

 Hi  Navneeth

Congartulations!  on  your  tank.  After  that  piece  from  aquascapes  i  would  say   "Be  Careful".  Some  plants  and  driftwood  in  this  tank  will  look  very  nice.  Do  post  the  pics  would  love  to  see  your  set  up.

I  would  recomend  you  go  with  the  best  filter,i.e  Ehiem,  you  donot  want  to  spend  money  again  on  another  filtration  system.  Ofcourse  i  have  been  using  a  dolphin  for  about  10  months  now  without  any  problems.  These  filter,Dolphin,  are  avilable  for  a  good  price  with  Sohail  of  Marine  aquariums  in  shivajinagar.

    All  the  best!

 Navneeth,
I  would  say  get  the  filter  ASAP.  And  of  course  Eheim  rocks  man.  I  suppose  you  might  wanna  look  beyond  2217.  I  had  a  look  at  matsyavatar  who  had  a  professional  filter  i  believe.
