I think you are being overwhelmed with all the information made available to you
My suggestion is take a step back and go through the specific information like Nitrogen cycle, basic filteration techniques and fish compatibility. You don't seem ready for planted tanks so no need to worry about CO2. And no need for any chillers as well for they are mostly used for SW Reef set-ups.
WRT the question asked by you, go for a cannister filter if you can. UGF is not recommended by most experts.
Once you start visiting the LFS in person, you will understand what we all have been trying to tell you. Don't blindly go by what the LFS guy says, because he might try to sell you his fishes by lying about compatibilities. Just get back with the names, google and check out if a combo works. Try to resist buying on impulse, especially the LFS guy says " Limited edition/very rare/would get sold by tomorrow'.
Also, for LFS in Calcutta, try with a new post with that as the subject line. I am sure hobbyists from nearby regions can help you, its just that most might not be reading this post.

this is a question for kolkata people specifically...I spoke on the phone with splashing meadows and the estimate they are giving for the aforementioned aquarium with 12mm glass seems to be quite high..around 5-6k. Could anyone tell me if the price is right? Also, if the price is over the top, could anyone point me to some people who can make the tank for me if i bought them all the materials? Many thanks in advance..
I would want to stock up on other breeds, but i am having trouble deciding. Guppies , Corys and Ottos are the obvious choices, but could you give me some other ideas? Try to exclude catfish and sharks for now... please help me out.
Any Cichlids i can keep?

You do not need to achieve 100% stocking capacity from day 1 .. Or some folk deliberately keep the stocking low ...
As suggested please do read about nitrogen cycle - Any questions feel free to ask ....
And NO CICHLIDS - with the above stock you have in mind ...

I have read about the nitrogen cycle, and i intend to go for it. I am not going to stock it up 100% but will go increasing little by little. The reason i asked was so i could have an end target in mind. As in once i finish stocking up completely, what all would be there in my tank.
If i were to keep cichlids, i know these fish wouldnt be possible...what other fish can i go for if i am aiming for a cichlid tank? One cichlid i have a weakness for is the Duboisi.

I'm not from Kolkata, but one thing about Splashing Meadows, the prices from this guy are always a bit on a higher side, but the quality is really good.
I'd suggest you buy all your live stock from him. As far as tank is concerned, you can get it custom made from anywhere.
Secondly, don't try to go for 100% capacity. 60% of total stocking capacity is fine enough for all times.
