Livestock Import Procedure.

There has been a lot of talk regarding the legal method of importing of live stock. Which is why i am putting up this article. Something that needs to be said here is that any one who is interested in importing livestock in our case Fishes & Water Plants etc should go through proper government channels as put in this article. The DGFT Director General of Foreign Trade is the nodal agency to get a license. To import Fishes or Plants you have to apply for a Special Import License from the local DGFT in your area & also send copies of the same to the Delhi DGFT. A visit to your local DGFT office will give you a clearer picture. The procedures & some of the forms that you will encounter are as below.
The reason for this article is so that we can have a lot of people applying for a license. This should help in making the procedures simpler & faster. Licenses can be applied for uder two categories
1.) Importation for Personal use.
2.) Importation for commercial use / sale.
If there is any thing any one thinks i can help with please let me know.
With best regards

A Long and Salty Journey...

This story is of a cute little Lionfish (Pterois volitans), that has changed the most number of hands I’ve ever known a marine fish to do. The flashback goes back into the time when I had just begun to experiment with marine invertebrates, having kept and killed every possible fish. : )

I step into a store, Lucky Aquarium, in Thane, near Mumbai, and browse through the tanks as usual. Nothing unusual is expected, until I speak to the LFS guy. He promises me a pair of sea horses at a price I could spend without a second thought. I delightfully pay him an advance and go straight back home to prepare an empty 2 footer for the expected arrivals. Part of the live media from another tank comes in handy here.

a slightly humourous account of starting a planted tank...

A short account of setting up a planted tankwith a bit of humour and some useful links.

Something unattainable and completely different from what I am surrounded by has always been exciting for me and nothing fascinated me more than watching life underwater – a realm so different from mine own. Spending vacations in a town that was on the bank of a river fueled this and soon enough as a kid in school I had my own tank. With the passage of time and the making of several mistakes I gave it up. When I did restart, my old love for native fish was still powerful and I was keen to make the plants live this time – I first learned that plants to survive cannot live on a bed of pebbles and indirect light so I got the basics sorted out and converted by 4 feet tank into a planted jungle of Vallesneria and Aponogeneton crispus. The laterite rich substrate and 80W lighting kept the plants going for 2 years but slowly growth started depleting and I too began tiring of the look.

Something Fishy

Local fishermen on the coastline of Dumas (near Surat located in the southern part of Gujarat) reported a strange happening on the 19th of September 2007 as they had seen many fish gasping for air the earlier evening and the very next morning lakhs (no exaggeration) of these fish were found dead and washed ashore by the tide.
